Future of education: Passau University conquers the hearts of students!
On February 26, 2025, students from the Adalbert-Stifter-Gymnasium (ASG) visited the University of Passau to deal in detail with the topics of research and teaching. This initiative was led by Prof. Dr. Jörg Scheffer, who warmly welcomed the group of around 50 students from the Q-12 class. The visit was part of the W seminars, which make an important contribution to study orientation and build a bridge between school and university.
The W seminars are aimed at introducing students to the methods of scientific work. These prepare the young people to write seminar papers, which they then present in exam interviews. Prof. Dr. Scheffer gave the students an introduction to the basics of scientific work.
Diverse program
As part of the visit there was also a play performed by Dr. Philipp Aufenvenne was directed. The teachers actively participated, which further enhanced the event. In addition, workshops on topics such as discourse analysis and geographical information systems were offered. The lecturers Kira Braun, Andreas Biedermann and Fabian Benno led these practice-oriented units.
The program concluded with important information on current challenges facing science. Discussions about populism and scientific skepticism were encouraged to promote critical engagement with these topics. Prof. Dr. Scheffer was positive about the feedback from the students and expressed his wish to see each other again after graduating from high school.
Support for students
The University of Passau also offers special seminars that help students write their own academic theses. These seminars are not only relevant for those who are working directly on their thesis, but also offer a general introduction to methodological and sociological aspects of science. Each session includes short lectures on various topics of scientific work, which are supported by accompanying literature.
Participants must actively participate in discussions and report on their own research projects. The Chair of Sociology, which specializes in the sociology of technology and sustainable development, supervises the final theses. These offerings optimally prepare students for the challenges of academic writing.
Educational research and its importance
Educational research plays a central role in improving the educational landscape. According to the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), the focus of educational research is on the requirements for good education in order to ensure personal, cultural and professional development as well as social participation. This research is funded with an annual budget of around 35 million euros in order to further develop the education system in Germany.
Important focal points in educational research are the quality of education, key and future competencies, and dealing with the digital world. The collaboration between science and educational practice is crucial in order to transfer the identified needs into practice and to develop targeted solutions. Over 100 projects address topics such as educational equity and inclusion, which supports diversity in education.
Overall, the visit by the students from Passau shows how important practical exposure to science is for young people and the opportunities this creates for their personal and academic development. The connection between school and university is thus significantly promoted through such programs.
