Future of teacher training: Bavaria relies on practical recommendations!

The further development of teacher training in Bavaria is the focus of a current report presented by a commission of experts. The title of the report is “Teacher training for the 21st century: attractiveness and quality through professional reference and scientific orientation”. This was reported by the University of Passau, which recently organized a discussion forum on the topic.

The report comprises 58 pages and, with 13 recommendations, provides concrete instructions for training future teachers. The aim of the forum at the University of Passau, organized by the Center for Teacher Training and Didactics (ZLF), was to develop central problem areas and framework conditions for teacher training in the context of the new recommendations.

Recommendations and priorities

The commission's recommendations, which were also presented as part of the "Bavaria Teacher Training Master Plan", include, among other things:

  • Bekenntnis zur schulartspezifischen Lehrerbildung.
  • Beibehaltung der zentralen ersten Staatsprüfung.
  • Erhöhung der Praxisorientierung im Studium.
  • Weiterentwicklung der Schulpraktika.
  • Erhöhte Aufmerksamkeit für Inklusion.
  • Engere Verzahnung von Studium, Referendariat und Fortbildungen.
  • Umgang mit heterogenen Klassen und sinnvolle Nutzung digitaler Medien.

At the press conference held by Professor Dr. Led by Martin Huber, chairman of the commission, Education Minister Anna Stolz emphasized the need for excellently trained teachers for the future. Science Minister Markus Blume emphasized that training should be modernized without carrying out fundamental structural reforms.

Practical implementation of the recommendations

A central concern of the discussion forum was the expansion of teaching-learning laboratories at the University of Passau. Here, students have the opportunity to experiment with digital teaching tools and try out innovative teaching-learning settings. The discussion about model courses to evaluate the recommendations was also held. The extension of the standard period of study was also discussed.

The next step includes a systematic inventory of the existing structures and offerings at the University of Passau. In order to clarify questions about the report, the expert commission held a virtual information event on June 23rd. A panel is also planned on July 17th, in which all Bavarian teacher training centers will take part, in order to develop a common perspective on the feasibility of the measures.

In summary, it can be seen that Bavarian teacher training wants to develop in a future-oriented manner.
