Future of medicine: Lower Bavaria Medical Campus starts in Passau!

On April 4, 2025, a delegation from the Bavarian State Parliament led by State Parliament President Ilse Aigner made an important visit to the Lower Bavaria Medical Campus (MCN) in Passau. The aim of the visit was to find out about the progress and development of the medical campus and took place at both the Passau Hospital and the University of Passau. Various topics were addressed, including the project history, the organizational and contract structure as well as the establishment of clinical and profile professorships at the University of Passau.

The University of Passau also presented the Center for Digital Medical Education (ZeDiMA), which acts as a central hub for digital teaching in the MCN. The university's important research activities in the field of health were explained. Prof. Dr. Ulrich Bartosch, President of the University of Passau, emphasized that the visit was “an honor and a pleasure” and demonstrated the university's scientific strength. A highlight of the visit was the demonstration of the multimedia lecture hall, where participants could experience virtual anatomy.

Background and objectives of the medical campus

Science Minister Markus Blume announced the Lower Bavaria Medical Campus as part of Bavaria's High-Tech Agenda. The decision to implement this important project was made in the Bavarian Council of Ministers on March 22, 2022. The aim of the medical campus is to ensure comprehensive medical care in all parts of Bavaria. In collaboration with the medical faculty in Augsburg and the Upper Franconia medical campus, a total of 2,700 new medical study places are being created.

The University of Regensburg's concept was convincing when implementing the medical campus. In addition to Passau, the training centers also include Deggendorf, Straubing and Landshut. In the final expansion, over 600 new study places are planned, which will enable a close integration of basic studies and clinical content.

Innovative teaching formats and future perspectives

As part of the medical campus, the plan is for the first part of the course to be completed at the University of Regensburg, while the second part takes place at the locations in Deggendorf, Landshut, Passau and Straubing. Another central element is the newly planned Center for Digital Medical Education in Passau, which will provide digital and hybrid teaching formats to ensure a smooth course of studies. Blume thanked his predecessor Bernd Sibler for the successful preparation of this extensive project.
