Future of nursing: New certificate course starts in winter semester!

On May 28, 2025, an event dedicated to nursing science studies took place at the Catholic University (KU). Inge Eberl, professor of nursing science, and Natascha Köstler, research assistant, initiated the program for GGDS trainees in generalist nursing. The aim was to offer the participants a comprehensive insight into the part-time study of nursing science at the KU.

The program included several elements including informative lectures, scientific posters and a campus tour. A lunch together promoted exchange and networking. The headmaster Silvia Sprehe accompanied the trainees and supported them in finding out more about the possibilities of further study. A study of over 1,200 nursing trainees surveyed shows that more than a third of them are interested in such a course of study.

Requirements and course structure

The requirements for studying nursing science are a technical college entrance qualification or a high school diploma. However, it is possible to study without a high school diploma if the nursing specialists have at least three years of professional experience. From the winter semester 2025/2026, a new certificate course in nursing science will be offered, which includes three modules:

• Wissenschaftliches Arbeiten und Schreiben
• Beratung und Edukation in der Pflege
• Pflegediagnosen und Klassifikation

Eberl emphasizes that the uniformity of nursing diagnoses in clinics and care facilities is not yet a standard across the board. The certificate course is designed to provide insights into nursing science and to help reduce reservations about studying. The modules can also be credited towards the bachelor's degree.

Study formats and flexibility

Distance learning in nursing science is very popular because it offers maximum flexibility when learning. It can be easily combined with work and family obligations. However, participants must demonstrate a high level of discipline and motivation. Teaching materials are usually provided online via a university portal or by post. Exams or assignments check your study progress. Some universities also offer attendance phases that consist of exchanges with fellow students and deepening the subject matter.

The target group of distance learning includes both career changers and nursing professionals who want to advance in their careers. The courses vary in duration, costs and content, and the fees can amount to several thousand euros. Financing options such as installment payments, student loans and scholarships are available.

Job and career prospects

The career opportunities for nursing science graduates are promising. These can work in positions such as ward or nursing service management, training and further education, corporate management or quality management. Typical areas of application are nursing homes, retirement homes as well as outpatient care services and clinics.

The average salary for graduates is between 42,000 and 54,000 euros gross annually. Graduates often decide to pursue a master's degree after completing their bachelor's degree, thereby further expanding their professional prospects.

In summary, it can be seen that nursing science has experienced constant development since the 1960s in the USA and from the 1980s in Germany. The students at the KU show great commitment to combining studies, work and family, supported by a comprehensive range of open events as part of the course offerings.
