50 years of UdK Berlin: A festival of arts and creativity!

On September 30, 2025, the Berlin University of the Arts (UdK Berlin) will celebrate its 50th anniversary. This institution was created in 1975 through the merger of the College of Fine Arts and the College of Music and Performing Arts. Since then, the UdK Berlin has developed into a renowned, cross-disciplinary artistic and scientific university.

The decision to give it the name “Berlin University of the Arts” was made in 2001 as part of a structural reform. The UdK's roots are deeply rooted in the field of artistic education, with a history stretching back over 300 years, including institutions such as the Royal Academy of Arts and the Academic University of Music.

Diverse range of courses and events

The UdK Berlin offers more than 70 degree programs in the disciplines of fine art, music, architecture, design, film and dance. Around 4,000 students are currently enrolled, a third of them international. The teacher training at the UdK pays particular attention to the role of the arts and culture in the development of young people.

In the anniversary year of 2025, the UdK is planning numerous special events that reflect the diversity and history of this important institution. Important events are the musical “Scherben Kinder”, the final theses of the master's students in the field of choreography and the presentations of the bachelor's students from the social and business communication course.

Anniversary events and activities

The set highlights include the award ceremony of the UdK Berlin Art Award 2025 on May 22nd, the music festival “crescendo 2025: InnenSaiten” from May 23rd to June 6th and the event “50 Years of UdK Berlin X 10 Years of Kunsthaus Dahlem” on June 14th. In July 2025, visitors can expect a performance of the well-known opera “Don Giovanni” in the UNI.T Theater, which is also celebrating its 50th anniversary.

A fascinating element of the anniversary are 17 interdisciplinary projects that deal with topics such as migration, loss of homeland and resource protection. Under the motto “Utopia,” the UdK Berlin also hosts the Berlin Summer University of the Arts from June to September, which offers workshops on artistic practice and transdisciplinary connections.

The anniversary activities and events serve not only to celebrate, but also to critically examine and exchange the successes of the last 50 years. These events attract visitors from a wide range of areas and strengthen the UdK's role as an important partner institution for universities, cultural institutions and research institutes.

For further information and details about the events in the anniversary year 2025, those interested can visit the official website of the UdK Berlin: udk-berlin.de or uni-heute.de call.
