50 years of UdK Berlin: Anniversary with over 700 free events!
On October 9, 2025, the Berlin University of the Arts (UdK) will look back on half a century of serving art. The founding of the UdK in 1975 was the result of the merger of the University of Fine Arts and the University of Music and Performing Arts. The start of the 2025/2026 winter semester is scheduled for October 13th and will be accompanied by an extensive event program that includes over 700 public, mostly free events. These events take place in the faculties of fine arts, design, music and performing arts as well as in the dance and jazz centers and the ZIWT and are a tribute to the artistic diversity of the UdK.
In cooperation with various cultural institutions, universities and research institutes, events are created that cover the breadth of artistic disciplines. Numerous special events are planned as part of the anniversary celebrations. The appeal to interdisciplinary exchange is reflected in a variety of projects that address social relevance and artistic innovation.
Diverse events as part of the anniversary celebration
The UdK will host various high-profile events during the celebrations. Highlights include:
- 10.-12. Oktober 2025: Gathering „On Crip Technique, Knowledge and Expertise“ am HZT Berlin im Bereich Tanz.
- Bis 30. Oktober 2025: Preisträger*innen-Ausstellung mit dem Wolfram Beck Preis für Bildhauerei.
- 31. Oktober 2025 – 4. Januar 2026: „SEEN BY #20 – CITYLICIOUS“ im Museum für Fotografie.
- 30. Oktober – 1. November und 6.-9. November 2025: Musical „Mantra Mia“ im Brandenburger Theater.
- 20. November 2025: Konzert des UdK Symphonieorchesters in der Philharmonie Berlin.
- 22. November 2025 – 15. Februar 2026: Preisträger*innen-Ausstellung des UdK Berlin Art Awards 2025.
The final theses of the master's students in the field of choreography as well as the presentations of the bachelor's students in social and business communication also receive particular attention. This offers young talents a platform to present their creative works to a wide audience.
Extensive preparation under new management
Since April 1, 2025, Prof. Dr. Markus Hilgert the UdK. Under his presidency, the university not only reflected on its 50-year history, but also launched numerous innovative projects. These include the interactive performance “Sacrament of Penance II,” in which participants can make their “confessions” in an artistic setting.
The UdK's event program is also characterized by a critical examination of current issues such as migration, loss of homeland and resource protection. The anniversary celebrations, which include a variety of art formats and interdisciplinary events, are intended to appeal to a broad audience and underline the relevance of artistic work in our society.
