Berlin schools strengthen China skills: Free further education concept!

With the aim of strengthening the China skills of students in Berlin, the Free University of Berlin has initiated a new, free further education offer. The project called “Campus meets School – 相约校园”, which starts in the 2025/26 school year, includes weekly working groups, teaching series and workshops on various China-related topics.

The variety of topics ranges from Chinese pop culture to history and philosophy to Chinese politics and dealing with anti-Asian racism. As part of the project, participants have the opportunity to deal intensively with the last (Qing) dynasty, the opium wars, the Taiwan conflict as well as modern aspects such as migrant work, street food and TikTok trends. Workshops on anti-Asian racism are also organized in collaboration with education consultant Hami Nguyen.

Cooperation and support

“Campus meets school – 相约校园” is a cooperation with the China Education Network and is financed by the Mercator Foundation and the Goethe-Institut. Six universities in Germany are involved in the project, with the Free University of Berlin represented by its Institute for Chinese Studies.

The project staff can be contacted directly and offers schools the opportunity to receive their support. Handouts and other materials are also available on the project website for the use of the teaching units.

The course offering is aimed specifically at students from seventh to twelfth grade. In the last half-year, almost 300 students from ten Berlin schools took part in this exciting educational project.

Integration and networking through CCTC

In parallel to this school project, the China Competence Training Center (CCTC) was founded in 2023, an initiative by the Humboldt University of Berlin, the Free University of Berlin, the Technical University of Berlin and the Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin. With the financial support of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), the CCTC is intended to offer a comprehensive training program for employees in knowledge and technology transfer as well as in the international sector.

The CCTC aims to realistically assess the opportunities and risks of (research) collaborations and transfer projects with China. The participants learn to deal with legal, political and social challenges. Regular events such as training courses, lectures and discussion groups help to build a network of China experts in Berlin and Brandenburg.

An important element of the CCTC is supporting young scientists with China-related research projects and promoting an evidence-based dialogue on China-related issues in public. The first CCTC events, which will take place from the end of May 2024, include lunch talks on the topics of travel preparation, meetings and IT security.

Together, these two programs offer a significant opportunity to promote China skills in various educational contexts. The Free University of Berlin and the China Competence Training Center are making a significant contribution to strengthening understanding of China and promoting intercultural education in Berlin.
