Berlin science on the move: innovations for the future!

The Technical University of Berlin (TU Berlin) plays a central role as a driver of technical innovations in the capital. As an important university, it supports the development of start-ups and ensures that Berlin benefits as an innovation location. These efforts are particularly important given the challenges that come with the commercial exploitation of scientific innovations, such as hurdles in financing and the need for systematic cooperation between science and industry. TU Berlin reports that these collaborations are crucial to improving the legal framework for the exploitation of innovations.

Another aspect of the current discussions is concern about possible austerity measures in the scientific sector, which could send a problematic signal. Representatives of the TU Berlin spoke out against these measures in November 2024 and emphasized Berlin's strengths: innovative companies, excellent science and cultural diversity. These strengths could be threatened by over-regulation, which is identified as a barrier to innovation.

Cooperation agreement between TU Berlin and IHK

A further step towards strengthening Berlin's innovative strength was the signing of a new cooperation agreement between the TU Berlin and the IHK Berlin on January 15, 2025. The aim of this agreement is the closer networking of science and business in the city. More than ten joint projects have already been successfully implemented, including the integration of international students and the promotion of start-ups. This is done as part of the “UNITE” concept, which aims to accelerate technology transfer.

The President of the IHK Berlin, Sebastian Stietzel, emphasized the need for close partnerships in order to overcome major challenges such as digital transformation, the energy transition and the healthcare system. Also Prof. Dr. Geraldine Rauch, President of the TU Berlin, sees this cooperation as an opportunity to advance innovative solutions. The future location of Charlottenburg, which is being planned, is intended to promote faster innovation and connection between science and business.

UNITE Sciences e. V. as an innovation engine

In addition, the UNITE Sciences e.V. association was founded on March 4, 2025. V. was founded, of which the Technical University of Berlin is also a member. This association aims to promote entrepreneurial talent and create an innovation ecosystem for science-based start-ups. TU Berlin highlights that UNITE is part of a governance structure to support the Startup Factory.

As part of UNITE, the establishment of a business company is also planned to establish connections between companies, foundations and the Startup Factory. In this context, an ambassador association with experienced personalities from the innovation and startup ecosystem will be created. Prof. Dr. Günter M. Ziegler was elected chairman of the board, supported by other well-known members.

The UNITE initiative is supported by various institutions, including the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Protection and the Berlin Senate Department for Economic Affairs, Energy and Public Enterprises. Future places Berlin reports that UNITE's goal is to create an internationally leading, highly digital ecosystem for science-based start-ups. As Berlin's history shows, innovative approaches and strong partnerships are the keys to the city's future economic development.
