Opening of the Dahlem Center for Linguistics: A festival of languages!

The Free University of Berlin will open the Dahlem Center for Linguistics (DCL) on June 20, 2025 at 4 p.m. This opening will take place in lecture hall 1a of the Rostlaube, Habel Schwertter Allee 45, and will attract media representatives, scientists and the public. The aim of the DCL is to bundle and promote the university's diverse linguistic expertise in a structured form.

An interdisciplinary research approach is at the heart of the DCL, focusing on various topics including systems linguistics, multilingualism, language acquisition, language in social contexts and neurolinguistics. Particular attention is paid to promoting young scientists, which is supported by a special poster session for doctoral students in FU Linguistics.

Research and guest lecture

A special guest scientific contribution comes from Dr. Bert Remijsen from the University of Edinburgh, who is conducting research at the DCL with the support of an ERC Synergy Grant. Dr. Remijsen will give a lecture on the language of the Shilluk, an ethnic group in South Sudan. His research focuses on the descriptive analysis of the Shilluk language as well as on suprasegmental systems in which aspects such as pitch, vowel quality and loudness play a role. He has previously made contributions to the study of suprasegmental systems in various languages.

In addition, a workshop will be offered that addresses linguistic perspectives on African languages. In this context, Dr. Mandana Seyfeddinipur on existing documentation gaps in African languages. Prof. Dr. Malte Zimmermann will provide insights into the West African languages ​​Akan and Hausa, while Prof. Dr. Uli Reich presents his studies on prosody in Wolof.

Opening by well-known personalities

The official opening of the Dahlem Center for Linguistics will be carried out by high-ranking personalities from the Free University, including Prof. Dr. Günter M. Ziegler, President of the University, and Prof. Dr. Michael Gamper, Dean of the Department of Philosophy and Humanities, and Prof. Dr. Ferdinand von Mengden, spokesman for the DCL.

The University of Hamburg also offers a master's degree in African languages ​​and cultures. This course focuses on research and application and allows you to deepen your knowledge of various profiles, such as applied African linguistics, linguistic analysis or Ethiopian studies. Students can be prepared for a differentiated education in the challenges of African languages ​​and cultures, broadening their professional prospects in media, international cooperation and cultural documentation.

Together, these initiatives represent a significant step forward in linguistic research and the promotion of interdisciplinary approaches that address the challenges of analyzing and documenting African languages.
