Festival matter 2025”: Berlin under the sign of sustainable material art!

This will happen in Berlin on April 10, 2025 _matter Festival 2025_ opens, which is dedicated to a radical questioning of the understanding of materials. Events will take place at twelve locations in the city until October 12, 2025, covering topics such as sustainable alternatives to energy-intensive technologies and the challenges of the climate crisis. The opening begins at 6 p.m. with a vernissage of the exhibition “Johtingeaidnu – The Path Within”.

The festival's curation is in the hands of Sophia Gräfe, Claudia Mareis and Peter Fratzl. This event aims to consider materials not just as passive substances, but to recognize them as living parts of our world that are dynamic, political and have their own memory.

Program highlights of the festival

The _matter Festival_ includes various program items, ranging from traditional lifestyles to innovative approaches to using our resources:

  • „Johtingeaidnu – The Path Within“ (10. April bis 13. Juli 2025) – Ort: Schering Stiftung. Thema: Traditionelle Lebensweise der nomadischen Rentierhirt*innen in Nordeuropa.
  • „What if the Ocean Were a City?“ (2. Mai bis 16. Mai 2025) – Ort: re:future lab. Inhalt: Symbiotisches Ko-Design zwischen Menschen und Wassertieren.
  • „Gefäße. Infrastrukturen des Lebens“ (4. Juni bis 12. Oktober 2025) – Ort: Berliner Medizinhistorisches Museum. Thema: Verbindung von Gefäßforschung und Geschichte der Berliner Kanalisation.
  • „Symbiotic Wood“ (27. Juni bis 21. September 2025) – Ort: Kunstgewerbemuseum. Thema: Kultureller Wert von Käferholz.
  • „Swamp Things!“ (7. Juli bis 20. Juli 2025) – Ort: BHROX bauhaus reuse. Thema: Rekultivierung von Mooren in den Alltag.

The organizer is the DFG-funded Cluster of Excellence “Matters of Activity” at the Humboldt University of Berlin.

Sustainable materials and their importance

Parallel to the festival's efforts, the EMProBio project demonstrates another innovative approach to the challenges of climate change. How Ingenieur.de reported, this project began on January 1, 2025 to develop sustainable technologies for the production of biogenic plastics. The main goal is to significantly reduce CO2 emissions, energy consumption and resource requirements in plastic production.

The focus is on the use of natural fibers and biogenic composite materials, especially for lightweight construction. These materials help to bind CO2 and require significantly less energy and resources during the manufacturing process than conventional plastics. The research group of the EMProBio project works with five partners to develop innovative technologies and processes that will support small and medium-sized companies in Thuringia.

Professor Stephan Husung from the TU Ilmenau, coordinator of the project, is optimistic that these developments will enable Thuringian companies in plastics processing to gain competitive advantages. The EMProBio project aims to support industrial transformation and make plastic production more sustainable globally.

The combination of such research projects and events such as the _matter Festival_ makes it clear that the path towards more sustainable material use is not only necessary, but can also be designed creatively and innovatively. A common goal is to develop solutions that have a positive impact on our planet and future generations.
