Humboldt University is starting exciting lecture series in summer 2025!

The Humboldt University of Berlin (HU) is offering a varied program of public lecture series in the summer semester of 2025 that deals with pressing social issues. How hu-berlin.de reports, entry to these events is free, and some lectures are also available online. This offer reflects the university's commitment to addressing current challenges and creating a forum for scientific and social discourse.

The lecture series cover various subject areas, ranging from the future of museums to intercultural dialogue. One example is the lecture “Changing Berlin Museums – Challenges, Opportunities, Visions”, which begins on April 16, 2025 in the HU Senate Hall. Experts from various areas such as museum directors and architects will discuss how rising energy prices and visitor numbers are changing the museum landscape.

Selection of lecture series

  • Beziehungsweise Familie (Start: 30. April 2025, Humboldt Forum): Diskussion über alternative Familien- und Verwandtschaftskonzepte.
  • Der Grüne Faden (Start: 17. April 2025): Nachhaltigkeitsdiskurse und interdisziplinäre Perspektiven.
  • Hybride Konflikte im Kalten Krieg (Start: 29. April 2025): Irreguläre Techniken der Konfliktführung.
  • W.E.B. Du Bois Lectures (Start: 6. Mai 2025): Interkultureller Dialog über kulturelle Themen.

The lecture series are not only an opportunity for further training, but also a sign of the HU's commitment to social issues. This commitment is based on the needs of today and the urgency of discussions about tolerance, climate change and social justice.

Climate neutrality by 2030

In parallel to the lectures, Humboldt University is working intensively on its goal of becoming climate neutral by 2030. On Tuesday, the Academic Senate unanimously approved a climate protection concept that goes back to the Fridays for Future protests, which mobilized millions of people in 2019. tagesspiegel.de reports that the university emitted a total of 38,000 tons of CO₂ in 2019, with 70% of these emissions coming from electricity and heat and 29% from mobility.

The HU's climate protection concept includes 14 large lead projects, which include comprehensive energy management and the plan to create climate-friendly university buildings. President Julia von Blumenthal emphasizes that the litmus tests are just beginning. Changes in academic freedom were also discussed. Vice President Christoph Schneider made it clear that air travel would not be banned across the board, but alternatives would have to be weighed up.

The HU sees itself as a role model for other institutions, especially in the higher education sector, which plays a central role in the implementation of global sustainability goals. How daad.de highlights, universities make a crucial contribution to the implementation of the 2030 Agenda, which aims at education, sustainable economic development and environmental and climate protection.

The requirements of the 2030 Agenda not only require a substantial expansion of higher education, but also the strengthening of partnerships and evidence-based policy advice. The HU takes this responsibility seriously and positions itself as a key player in promoting sustainability initiatives.
