Artificial intelligence in medicine: opportunities and risks in focus!
On Wednesday, May 28, 2025, the exhibition “THE NEVERENDING CURE” will open in the UNI_VERSUM of the main building of the Technical University of Berlin. The event, which starts at 6:00 p.m., is organized by the Berlin Institute for the Foundations of Learning and Data (BIFOLD) and the Schering Foundation. The focus of the exhibition is the critical examination of the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in medicine and the associated trust in these technologies.
The opening ceremony will be led by Prof. Dr. Klaus-Robert Müller, co-director of BIFOLD. Afterwards Prof. Dr. med. Frederick Klauschen from the LMU Pathological Institute will give an insight into the topic. An artist talk with the artists kennedy+swan and scientists from BIFOLD will round off the event, moderated by Nataša Vukajlović from the Schering Foundation.
The role of artificial intelligence in medicine
The integration of AI in healthcare has increased significantly in recent years. The aim of these developments is to improve medical diagnoses, optimize patient care and develop individual therapeutic approaches. Advances in computing power and techniques such as machine learning and deep learning have revolutionized systems' ability to efficiently analyze large amounts of data. As a result, AI systems can make more precise diagnoses and predict treatment courses, particularly in areas such as radiology and personalized medicine.
The exhibition will also address the challenges posed by the use of AI in medicine. There are legitimate concerns about data protection, patient autonomy and the potential biases that can result from the use of algorithms. Interdisciplinary collaboration between computer scientists, doctors and ethicists is required to ensure responsible use. Discussion about the legal and ethical framework is essential to create trust in these technologies.
Thematic focuses of the exhibition
The central questions of the exhibition include, among other things, the handling of sensitive health data, the error-proneness of current systems and the effects on diagnoses. Trust in future diagnostic AIs is being critically questioned because current systems harbor both opportunities and risks. Experts emphasize that the development of ethical standards is of utmost importance in order to meet legal and social challenges.
The artists kennedy+swan, both of whom are scholarship holders of the BIFOLD residency program “Art of Entanglement”, will also present their perspectives and creative contributions for discussion. The exhibition will thus become a place for dialogue about the diverse facets of AI in medicine and the responsible integration of modern technologies.
Media representatives are warmly invited to take part in the event. Registration is possible by email to katharina.jung(at)tu-berlin.de.
