Sustainability in focus: ESMT appoints corporate management experts!

The past few years have brought noticeable change in the corporate landscape. Companies face the challenge of assuming not only economic responsibility, but also ecological and social responsibility. In this context, ESMT Berlin today announced a significant addition to its faculty team: Hami Amiraslani will now contribute his expertise in the areas of corporate sustainability and financial contracts. This means that ESMT's international faculty has grown to 48 members from 18 countries, which underlines the global orientation of the institution. ESMT reports that Amiraslani was previously an assistant professor of accounting and controlling at INSEAD.

Amiraslani specializes in studying the internal and external drivers and consequences of companies' environmental and social performance. He has already been featured in leading academic journals such as the Journal of Accounting and Economics and the Review of Accounting Studies. His research also focuses on how governance and legal frameworks influence companies' financial contracting decisions and outcomes.

Academic and professional backgrounds

After completing his PhD in Accounting at the London School of Economics and Political Science, Amiraslani was awarded the Dean’s Award for Excellence in MBA Teaching multiple times. At ESMT he will teach corporate sustainability reporting, management accounting and financial contracts in master's and PhD programs. His professional career is also noteworthy: Before his academic career, he worked as a bank consultant in the area of structuring syndicated loans and project financing.

The challenges that companies face are diverse. The complexity and ambiguity of the current economic system are increasing, supported by exponentially increasing change and progress. Companies are required to proactively anticipate developments, regulations and future preferences. PWC highlights that the tried and tested “business as usual” is no longer sustainable and a rethinking of corporate management, control and culture is necessary.

The path to corporate responsibility

Current corporate management faces three main challenges: increasing complexity and ambiguity, a lack of responsibility and comparability, and the need to take complex decision-making criteria into account. Experts offer key insights and strategies to overcome these challenges. Important elements for successfully implementing sustainability in corporate governance include resilience, regulation and relevance.

Through the collaboration of Hami Amiraslani, ESMT Berlin will make a significant contribution to the academic and practical discussion on corporate sustainability while raising awareness of these important issues among the next generation of leaders.
