Students at the University of Berlin: Discover sustainability in the workshop jungle!

The Free University of Berlin will soon be inviting you to the “Student University Sustainability + Climate Protection”, which will take place from March 24th to 28th, 2025. This free one-week offer is aimed at students in the 5th and 6th grades and their teachers from all 12 Berlin districts. The aim of the initiative is to familiarize students with topics of sustainable development through practical workshops. Loud free university So far, 44,800 students and 2,000 teachers have taken part in the programs, and an additional 52,800 workshop places have been taken up.

For the event in March 2025, the organizers expect around 1,500 students who will be informed about various aspects of sustainability and climate protection in 63 school classes. The workshops take place not only in the university's modern laboratories, but also in community gardens and the botanical garden and cover topics such as climate-friendly cities, sustainable living and promoting biodiversity. Special offers include workshops on water cycles, a mushroom laboratory, bioenergy and upcycling.

Diverse educational offerings

The educational offering is designed to help children discover sustainability and climate protection with all their senses. Trainers from science, business, art and environmental education lead the exciting workshops. At the same time, further training for teachers and seminars for teacher training students are offered in order to deepen the knowledge of education for sustainable development (ESD) among teachers. These measures underline the central role that education plays in climate protection.

The importance of holistic education is also illustrated by the main topics of ESD. These include, among other things, poverty reduction, gender equality, health, energy and the protection of ecosystems and biodiversity. The focal points are reflected in the “Student Uni” events, which address not only local but also global challenges with the aim of implementing the sustainable development goals of the 2030 Agenda.

A groundbreaking project

The project is part of a comprehensive initiative to promote education for sustainable development in Germany and internationally. In the course of the UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development, the Free University of Berlin has taken on an important role as an active member in various committees for national ESD implementation. It contributes to the holistic transformation of learning and teaching environments and promotes the mobilization of youth.

The “Student:innenUni” is one of the outstanding projects recognized by the UNESCO program. Such initiatives are important for imparting knowledge and problem awareness, which is essential today in order to deal sustainably and responsibly with our environment.

In this context, Didacta is also an important trade fair for the education system in Germany, which in 2025 will have the motto “Democracy needs education - education needs democracy”. Education for sustainable development is treated as one of the top topics and illustrates the demands placed on education by society as a whole.
