Students at TU Berlin: Satisfaction and criticism are the focus of the meeting!
On Friday, July 18, 2025, an online meeting via Webex of the Board of Trustees of the Technical University of Berlin will take place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. This was announced in a recent invitation from the university. The agenda includes a variety of important topics, including the approval of the minutes of the previous meeting as well as reports from the Executive Board and the University Foundation of TU Berlin. Invitation links will be sent via email and registration through the press office is required.
The agenda for the meeting includes, among other things, the presentation of the results of a survey on satisfaction with the cooperation between the Central University Administration (ZUV) and the faculties, which was carried out in March 2025. This survey provides important insight into students' satisfaction with their teaching staff and the general teaching conditions at the university.
Student satisfied, but with criticisms
According to a survey that included 1,524 students from all disciplines at TU Berlin, 61 percent of those surveyed were “satisfied” or “very satisfied” with their teaching staff. Nevertheless, 12 percent of students express negative reviews. This reflects a mixed perception of teaching quality, with 52 percent of students saying they are satisfied with the overall quality of teaching in their subject.
The survey also shows that 37 percent of students become more and more motivated as their studies progress, while 29 percent feel demotivated. Positive feedback also refers to the correspondence of exams with the teaching material and the availability of the lecturers. However, critical comments concern the examination organization and the long waiting times at the examination office.
Improvements in planning
Christian Thomsen, the new president of the TU Berlin, is planning comprehensive improvements to administrative processes in order to address the problems mentioned. This includes, among other things, the introduction of a telephone hotline to improve the accessibility of the examination office. In addition, the lack of suitable learning spaces for small groups is viewed critically, which indicates a need for better equipment at the university.
Despite the challenges, 63 percent of bachelor's students want to do a master's degree at TU Berlin immediately afterwards. Only 1 percent of those surveyed plan to forego a master's degree altogether. Of the master's students, 50 percent do not come from the TU, with 41 percent coming from other German universities and 7 percent from abroad.
The upcoming Board of Trustees meeting will not only address the administrative aspects of the university, but will also address the experiences and needs of students. This could potentially result in important decisions and initiatives for the further development of the university. The presentation of the University Foundation of the TU Berlin and the cooperation agreements within the framework of strategic collaborations are also on the agenda of the meeting.
