UdK Berlin celebrates 50 years of art – anniversary program starts in April!

On April 14, 2025, the Berlin University of the Arts (UdK) began its summer semester and is simultaneously celebrating its 50th anniversary. The university, which emerged in 1975 from the merger of the College of Fine Arts and the College of Music and Performing Arts, was elevated to a university in 2001. To mark the anniversary, various special events are planned that reflect the diversity and rich history of the UdK. The most important events this summer include the musical “Scherben Kinder” and various final theses by master’s students in the field of choreography, which will take place in the coming months.

The UdK, which offers over 70 degree programs in a wide range of artistic disciplines, has around 4,000 students, a third of whom are international. The newly appointed President, Prof. Dr. Markus Hilgert took office on April 1, 2025 and will direct the university's fortunes in this anniversary season. Diversity and interdisciplinary exchange are at the forefront of the celebrations marking this occasion, with many events also emphasizing the social relevance of artistic works.

Special events in the anniversary year

The outstanding dates include the final presentations of the Bachelor students in the Social and Business Communication course as well as the award ceremony UdK Berlin Art Award 2025. This will be ceremonially presented on May 22, 2025. Furthermore, an exciting music festival entitled “crescendo 2025: InnenSaiten” will take place from May 23rd to June 6th, 2025.

In the context of the anniversary celebrations, the event “50 Years of UdK Berlin X 10 Years of Kunsthaus Dahlem” on June 14, 2025 and the performance of the opera “Don Giovanni” in the UNI.T Theater in July 2025 will also be particularly highlighted.

Artistic projects and performances

As part of the anniversary, the UdK will also present innovative projects, including the interactive performance “Sacrament of Penance II”. Participants can “confess” works of art and devote themselves to creative tasks. A total of 17 interdisciplinary projects were selected through an open call, dealing with topics such as migration, loss of homeland and resource protection.

Another highlight is the Berlin Summer University of the Arts, which will take place from June to September 2025. The focus is on workshops that are dedicated to artistic practice and are intended to promote transdisciplinary connections. This year, the theme “Utopia” explores how art can serve as a means of creating an ideal world and dealing with social challenges.

Overall, the UdK's event program not only reflects the successes of the past 50 years, but also offers space for critical discussions of current topics.
