Revealed: The Importance of Counter-Forensics for the Truth!

On Friday, October 10, 2025, a crucial lecture on counter-forensics will take place at the BTU Cottbus - Senftenberg from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. The event, which will be held in lecture hall 1 of teaching building 1A on the Konrad-Zuse-Straße 1 campus in Cottbus, is free of charge for anyone interested and does not require prior registration. The lecture will be held in English and offers a German translation.

The event is organized by the Center for Scientific Continuing Education and the BTU's master's program in Forensic Sciences and Engineering. The lecture will be given by Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Spyra and Dr. Dirk Marx moderates and aims to shed light on the application of counter-forensics in finding the truth. This method refers to the analysis and refutation of forensic findings and the detection of political wrongdoing through comprehensive forensic reports.

Focus on Forensic Sciences

The presentation will have a strong focus on forensic science and international law and will reference Eyal Weizman and his method of open verification. This method has the potential to provide deeper insights into solving crimes by questioning the responsibility of states for their actions.

The master's program in Forensic Sciences and Engineering at the BTU is unique in Germany and offers a part-time continuing education course. It also enables people without specific requirements for a master's degree to continue their education. The focus of the course includes crime scene work, investigative procedures, evidence analysis and the judicial usability of forensic results.

Forensic sciences encompass a variety of disciplines that use scientific analysis to aid law enforcement and secure convictions. The American Academy of Forensic Sciences defines forensic sciences as “any science used in law” and lists a total of 12 disciplines, including Criminalistics, Digital & Multimedia Sciences, and Forensic Pathology/Biology. Alliant International University explains that each of these disciplines handles specific roles and types of evidence.

Expansion of the teaching profile

From the winter semester of 2025/2026, the teaching profile at the BTU will be further expanded to offer in-depth certificates in areas such as identifying the cause of fire, writing, white-collar crime and chemical and biological substances. The challenges of digitalization as well as international and European trends in criminalistics will also be part of the training in order to offer aspiring professionals a wide range of tools for forensics.

In addition, the CAS (Certificate of Advanced Studies) in criminology, forensics and law is also offered at the ZHAW at an international level. This course, which runs from May 2027 to January 2028, covers fundamental aspects of criminology, forensics and legal principles and is aimed at professionals in the fields of social work, psychology, education and law. ZHAW offers this further training with a blended learning approach to enable flexible participation.

For those interested in the jury and expertise in the field of forensic sciences, participation in the events and programs is strongly recommended in order to better get to know the diverse possibilities and developments in this exciting field.
