Construction of the first university dental clinic in Brandenburg: progress and plans!
On August 8, 2025, Mayor Steffen Scheller visited the construction site of the new dental clinic at the Brandenburg Medical School (MHB) on Bauhofstrasse. Together with Martin Dornblut, head of land-use planning, nature conservation and building law, and MHB Chancellor Dr. Gerrit Fleige, Scheller checked the progress of the work. The dental clinic will be the first of its kind at the MHB and has already gained in importance.
Project developer Florian Grotmann from ArteTectura gave insight into the extensive changes the building has undergone since the last inspection in April. The newly designed dental clinic will provide a light-flooded environment thanks to extensive glazing. According to Grotmann, the facade will be closed until late autumn 2025, after which interior work will begin. This will be done in collaboration with regional construction partners, while the sanitary expansion is planned on our own.
Importance for the region
Dr. During the tour, Gerrit Fleige emphasized the great relevance of the dental clinic for university dental education in Brandenburg. The offer will not only enrich the training at the MHB, but also improve the regional supply of qualified dentists. Building on the construction work, the MHB will move in with dentistry students in April 2026, thus taking an important step in the training of dentists in Brandenburg, where no corresponding training has previously been offered.
In addition, the city has initiated further construction projects in connection with the dental clinic. This includes the demolition of the old tram transformer station in 2026/2027 and the construction of a new canal bridge, which is expected to be completed by the end of 2028. These measures are intended to enhance the immediate surroundings of the new dental practices and also improve the infrastructure for the students.
History of the location
The location of the new dental clinic has an eventful history. The former power station and the tram depot, which were built around 1900 and 1910, are defining elements of the cityscape. However, no significant activity has taken place on the site in the last ten years. However, construction work will begin in the summer of 2024 to convert the old power plant, which will also function as a teaching building for dentistry. Grotmann reported that the demolition work has already been completed and the shell construction is now in full swing.
The MHB will need a total of 3,600 square meters for the new dental clinic, with the shell of the building scheduled to be completed in June 2024. In order to ensure that the study continues, an interim solution is planned on Zwilling-Scholl-Straße until the new clinic is fully operational. Access to dental training will be available to 48 students per year from 2024, representing significant progress for training in the health sector.
Preparations for dentistry training began in summer 2023, including the development of the curriculum. The application for approval must be approved by the Ministry of Science, Research and Culture, which can take around a year.
In connection with the inspection of the construction site, Scheller plans to visit again in the summer of 2024 to ensure that construction progress is on schedule. This will provide the opportunity to also evaluate the next steps in the development of the dental clinic and beyond in order to establish the site as an important training location for future generations of dentists.
