Brandenburg Computer Science Olympiad: Students shine in Potsdam!

On June 7, 2025, the winners of the Computer Science Olympiad in the state of Brandenburg were announced. The award ceremony took place on Friday at the University of Potsdam in Golm. This year, a total of 23 participants took part in the competition, which took place over two days and tested the young people's computer science skills. The competition is a cooperation between the Ministry of Youth, Education and Sport, the Brandenburg State Association for the Promotion of Students Interested in Mathematics, Natural Sciences and Technology, the Hasso Plattner Institute and the University of Potsdam.

Florian Wunderlich (17) from Marie Curie High School Dallgow-Döberitz took first place. Katharina Walcher (17) from Hermann-von-Helmholtz-Gymnasium Potsdam secured second place, while third place was shared by Justus Wettach (17) from Marie-Curie-Gymnasium Dallgow-Döberitz, Jonathan Panzer (17) and Ansgar Müller (17) from Carl-Friedrich-Gauß-Gymnasium Frankfurt (Oder). Education State Secretary Hendrik Fischer congratulated the winners in his speech and acknowledged their outstanding achievements.

Competitive structure and challenges

The competition lasted two days. The first day was characterized by programming tasks and solving algorithmic problems in teamwork. On the second day, the participants had to present their knowledge of general computer science issues and their ways of thinking. The young computer science talents were looked after by students from the Hasso Plattner Institute, while an expert jury made up of computer science professors, teachers and students evaluated their performance.

Since its founding in 2017, the Brandenburg Informatics Olympiad has acted as a platform for students who want to engage intensively with the methods, content and applications of computer science. The aim of the competition is to motivate young people to work with computer science beyond their school knowledge.

Background of the Computer Science Olympiad

The preliminary round for the Olympiad will be held parallel to the main event, and the first high-performance participants have already appeared there. Jonathan Panzer and Nanami Kurzweil took first place in the preliminary round, followed by Justus Wettlach, Jakob Wanke and Finn Gerlach, who took second place.

The competition stands out because it allows students who were not placed in the preliminary round to take part in the main round. Your commitment will be rewarded with a small point lead. The Brandenburg Informatics Olympiad is not just a competition, but also an opportunity for participants to expand their skills and possibly grow into other national competitions, such as the Federal Informatics Competition. This competition, which is aimed at young people up to the age of 21, lasts one year and consists of several rounds, with the third round determining the participants who are allowed to take part in the International Informatics Olympiad.

The commitment of the organizers, organizers and supporters is crucial in order to offer a high-quality platform for young talent in computer science. Applying computer science knowledge and promoting young talent through competitions such as the Computer Science Olympiad is a step in the right direction.
