BTU and USST: New double degree for engineers in Cottbus!
On May 21, 2025, a five-member delegation visited the University of Shanghai for Science and Technology (USST) the Brandenburg Technical University of Cottbus-Senftenberg (BTU). USST President Prof. ZHU Xinyuan led the group, which was warmly welcomed by BTU President Prof. Gesine Grande and Vice President for Internationalization Prof. Wolfram Berger.
A central topic of the visit was the extension of the double degree program in the “Power Engineering” master’s degree program. This program was established in 2010 and has already produced 37 graduates. The aim of the program is to train highly qualified specialists in the field of energy supply and to promote the mobility of students and scientists. The double degree program enables participants to earn degrees at both their home university and the partner university.
Collaboration and exchange
The cooperation between the BTU and the USST has existed since 2000, with a particular focus on engineering sciences. A structured student exchange was initiated in 2008, which forms the basis for successful exchange and mutual learning between the institutions. After the double contract was signed, a constructive exchange took place about the further development of this cooperation.
As part of the visit, the USST delegation also toured various research facilities of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, Electrical and Energy Systems. These facilities offer insights into current BTU research projects and methods.
Course offerings in the field of energy technology
As part of “Electrical Power Engineering”, the BTU also offers the possibility of a double degree with various universities in Taiwan, China, Poland and Russia. This course of study offers an integrated semester or stay abroad, which further promotes international exchange. The lectures in the degree program are held in English and the curriculum covers topics that contribute to addressing the challenges of climate change and geopolitical dependencies.
At the same time, the Energy Economics course will be offered at the 2024/25 winter semester Ulm University of Technology offered in a modified form. The bachelor's degree program focuses on sustainable energy supply and business, with a focus on the development and implementation of innovative business models. Graduates are in demand in a variety of professional fields, including project management, risk and environmental management, as well as energy trading and management.
It is important for interested students to note the entry requirements. This includes a general university entrance qualification, a subject-specific university entrance qualification or a technical college entrance qualification as well as a strong interest in topics relating to energy, the environment and IT.
The development of study programs in the field of energy technology and energy economics clearly shows the relevance and need to promote innovative approaches to a sustainable and efficient energy supply.
