Climathon 2025: Students develop green solutions for industry!

The German-Polish Climathon will take place for the first time in 2025 as part of the Decarbon Days and aims to develop innovative solutions to challenges in the areas of green energy and industry. Students from the BTU Cottbus-Senftenberg and the University of Zielona Góra are invited to take part in this creative competition in teams. This contest is supported by partner companies from Germany and Poland.

Participants can choose from five predefined tasks that are designed so that they can provide solutions even without in-depth specialist knowledge. Before the actual competition phase, a training session is offered, scheduled for mid-June, which is intended to prepare the teams for the challenges ahead. The solutions will then be presented during a live final at the end of June, with each group having a maximum of ten minutes to present their ideas.

Important dates and conditions of participation

For those interested, the following deadlines are on the calendar:

  • Bewerbungszeitraum bis 23. Mai 2025
  • Auswahl der Finalteams bis 27. Mai 2025
  • Trainingstag Mitte Juni 2025
  • Aufgabenveröffentlichung am 19. Juni 2025
  • Live-Finale während der Decarbon Days am 27. und 28. Juni 2025

Teams with three to five members can take part. All solutions should preferably be presented in English to ensure broad comprehensibility.

The background of Decarbon Days

The Decarbon Days are part of the effort to reduce CO2 emissions and an important step towards a more sustainable industry, such as the BMWK emphasized. As part of the GreenTech innovation competition, numerous projects are funded that aim to develop and implement environmentally friendly technologies. The ministry has provided over 75 million euros for 21 projects that, among other things, examine digital technologies to improve energy efficiency.

A prominent example is the “Green Streaming” project, which aims to optimize energy consumption during video streaming. The main focus is to make all video streaming processes more environmentally friendly. Artificial intelligence and new measuring tools are used to precisely balance CO2 consumption.

The connection between the Climathon and the Decarbon Days not only creates space for creative approaches to solving current challenges, but is also part of a larger network that promotes innovative, environmentally friendly technologies and supports their practical application in business.
