Cottbus relies on dual studies: the future of environmental sciences begins!

Orlando decided to do a dual course of study at the BTU Cottbus-Senftenberg and is extremely satisfied with this choice. He benefits from a solid combination of theoretical knowledge and practical application, which gives him extensive professional experience alongside his studies. This practical focus not only helps to better internalize the theoretical content, but also promotes the development of practical skills that are essential in today's professional world. He also emphasizes the importance of support and advice from fellow students on the same course, which ensures a positive learning atmosphere.

Remuneration is another major advantage of the dual study program, as students are also paid for their work during their practical phases. However, the close timing of theoretical and practical phases leads to less free time, which makes well-organized time planning necessary. Exams often take place during the practical phase, which entails additional learning effort after regular working hours. Despite these challenges, Orlando appreciates the short distances in Cottbus, which can be quickly covered by bike.

Offer from the BTU Cottbus-Senftenberg

The BTU Cottbus-Senftenberg will expand its dual study program to include the “Applied Natural Sciences” and “Environmental Sciences” degree programs from the 2026/27 winter semester. This study model includes two learning locations: the university and the practice partner. During the lecture period at the BTU, basic theoretical study modules are completed, followed by practice-oriented content at the practice partner, where at least four practical modules are required. Orlando advises prospective students to gain practical experience early on, ideally through internships at companies with dual degree programs, in order to gain realistic insights into their future careers.

The course in environmental sciences at the BTU is designed to integrate practice. In the first four semesters, basic modules are taught in various environmental science areas such as environmental technology, water management and sustainability strategies. From the third semester, students can choose their specialization in consultation with their practice partner, up to a 12-week compulsory internship in the seventh semester, which ends with the bachelor's thesis.

Career prospects for graduates

Graduates of the dual degree program in environmental sciences open up numerous professional opportunities in various environmentally-related industries. These include nature and environmental protection authorities, agriculture, forestry and water management offices as well as planning and consulting offices. Political organizations and industries such as the chemical and biotechnology sectors are also looking for well-trained specialists. The areas of responsibility range from environmental management to advice and planning on environmental protection issues to the testing and monitoring of manufacturing processes and waste disposal.

Graduates who would like to further their qualifications have the opportunity to work in research, teaching and training in the field of environmental protection after completing a postgraduate degree or doctorate. Vocational training at various educational institutions also represents an interesting perspective.

For everyone who is interested in the dual study program, an information event will take place at the central campus in Cottbus on November 22nd, 2025 from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Further information is available on the BTU’s official study portal as well as the corresponding pages Job board and to Studies and environmental protection available.
