Cottbus European Weeks: A celebration of diversity and collaboration!

The Brandenburg Technical University of Cottbus-Senftenberg (BTU) and the city of Cottbus will be placing a significant emphasis on the European community in May 2025. As part of the Europe Weeks, a multifaceted program is presented that promotes intercultural exchange and celebrates the common values of European society. The aim of this initiative is to strengthen the European idea and bring citizens into conversation with one another.

The European Weeks are a cooperation between the “Education & Integration” department of the city of Cottbus and the International Relations Office of the BTU. Among the highlights in May is a cinema week at OBENKINO, which will run from May 1st to 7th, 2025. The film “The Sea is the Sky” will be shown, which is intended to encourage reflection on Europe. On May 8th, the “Café Europa” opens in the culture and meeting center 7512 in Neu Schmellwitz, where interactive activities are offered for all citizens.

A variety of events during the European Weeks

A special event takes place on May 16: the Day of Ukrainian National Costume, which is celebrated in Pushkin Park. This will be supplemented by the Cottbus European Talks, which will also take place on May 16th. Thematically, these discussions will deal with Lausitz’s application as a “Net Zero Valley”, a future-oriented project that aims at sustainability.

Another highlight is the “Speak Dating” in the city museum, which takes place on May 20th and celebrates its two-year anniversary. A sporting day awaits citizens on May 21st: the Cottbus City Sports Association is organizing German-Polish sporting events in the athletics stadium under the motto “Mission Paralympics”. Also on May 21st there will be activities on the BTU central campus, such as an escape game and a EUNICE postcard campaign dedicated to the topic of experiences abroad.

The Cottbus welcome festival KLĔB A SOL, which will be celebrated in the city center on May 22nd, also promises a variety of activities and an excellent opportunity to experience the cultural diversity of Europe.

European universities and their role

In the context of these events, the BTU also plays an important role in European higher education. The university is part of the European university alliance “European UNIversity for Customized Education” (EUNICE), which includes nine other European universities. These alliances aim to strengthen education and research institutions in Europe by offering common curricula and flexible learning opportunities.

There are currently a total of 65 European university alliances that bring together more than 570 universities from 35 countries, including partners from Ukraine. Germany occupies a prominent position, with 67 universities represented in the funded alliances. These international collaborations are part of the EU strategy to promote European values and modernize higher education through greater Europeanization.

The Cottbus European Weeks and the role of the BTU in the European university networks underline the effort to promote intercultural exchange and keep the European idea alive. The program not only provides a platform for discussions, but also invites all citizens to actively participate and get to know Europe better.

Registration is not mandatory to take part in the Cottbus European Talks. Further information can be found on the BTU website.
