A pioneer in health services research says goodbye: Neugebauer is retiring!
On April 8, 2025, Prof. Edmund Neugebauer was farewelled at a scientific symposium. Around 50 colleagues, companions and friends took part in this important event. Neugebauer is considered a pioneer and one of the most important healthcare researchers of his generation. He has published over 1,000 scientific articles, including more than 600 original papers. He has also written and edited numerous books that have received great attention both in science and in politics.
Neugebauer was co-founder and long-time chairman of the German Network for Healthcare Research (DNVF). He was responsible for publishing two key textbooks on health services research. In 2016 he became dean and academic director of the MHB and was elected president in 2019. He continued his academic career as a senior professor for health services research at the MHB.
Influence on health services research
Under Neugebauer's leadership, research centers and integrated working groups were set up at the MHB, which made a decisive contribution to raising the profile of the MHB in the area of health services research. He also initiated the founding of a center for health services research and a unique master's degree program in this area. Prof. Hans-Uwe Simon, the current president of the MHB, acknowledged Neugebauer's far-reaching influence on the institution, while Prof. Monika Klinkhammer-Schalke particularly emphasized his orientation towards patients.
Neugebauer was always concerned about patient participation in the health system. Before retiring from academia, he plans to dedicate himself intensively to his family and his four grandchildren. Numerous laudators such as Dawid Pieper, Prof. Holger Pfaff and Dr. Gerrit Fleige also recognized his commitment and achievements.
Future of health services research
Neugebauer was recently confirmed as chairman of the DNVF for another two years. This decision was announced at the network's annual meeting on June 7th in Berlin. With this confirmation, Neugebauer will likely continue to advance health services research in the network. The federal government's quality offensive represents a major challenge that affects both patients, health insurance companies and health policy. Neugebauer and his team have high expectations of health services research.
The DNVF also started the “Health Care Research 2020” strategy process to further establish research in Germany. Important topics include patient focus, quality-oriented hospital planning and cross-sector care. The goals include proving the benefits of treatments in everyday care and not just in clinical studies. The need to continuously develop the conceptual and methodological foundations is evident.
In order to promote health services research, improved data access and its quality are also crucial. The focus is on promoting young scientists and interdisciplinary exchange. The BMBF supports health services research through basic research and various funding measures in order to develop tailor-made solutions to the challenges in the healthcare system.
With his commitment, Neugebauer has had a major influence on the development of health services research in Germany and his legacy will continue to be felt at the MHB and the DNVF in the coming years.
