Energy transition in focus: Cottbus invites you to the digital future of energy!

The second annual meeting of the Energy Innovation Center (EIZ) took place in Cottbus on June 10th and 11th, 2025. This important event served as a platform for exchange among experts from science, business and politics and attracted over 600 participants. The two-day meeting included both scientific discussions and insights into current challenges and developments in energy research. Particularly noteworthy was the integration of the second day into the 25th Brandenburg Energy Day at the BTU Cottbus-Senftenberg, which established itself as a traditional meeting of the Brandenburg energy industry. The focus here was on topics such as the energy transition, information and the discussion about future developments future-from-brandenburg.de informed.

The first day of the meeting was characterized by an internal specialist program organized by the High Power Grid Converter (HPGC) Lab and the Control Systems and Cyber Security (COSYS) Lab. After the opening speeches, among others by Prof. Dr. Gesine Grande, President of the BTU, and Stefan Müller from the Federal Ministry for Research, Technology and Space, were followed by a keynote speech by Prof. Alessandra Parisio from the University of Manchester. Her presentation on grid frequency stabilization set important accents for the subsequent presentations on the topics of energy storage, CO₂ catalysis and P2X processes, which were presented by EIZ researchers.

Expert forum on digitalization

On the second day, the EIZ presented itself with its own stand on the BTU central campus. There, visitors could view information about ongoing research projects, including a demonstrator from the COSYS Lab. The guests at the stand included Daniel Keller, Minister for Economic Affairs, Labor, Energy and Climate Protection of the State of Brandenburg, as well as Prof. Dr. Gesine Grande.

An important program item was the specialist forum 4 with the title “Digitalization for the energy transition”, which was led by Dr.-Ing. Christine Kühnel from the Reiner Lemoine Institute moderated the event. Experts like Dr. Jakob Pohlisch, PD Dr. Thomas Strasser and Ray Dubslaff discussed the role of digital technologies in energy supply and supporting grid transformation. Prof. Dr. Dr. Tanja Kneiske and Dr. Sabrina Schmitz emphasized the importance of AI and data-based applications for user participation and energy efficiency. The discussion took place in the context of the insight that digitalization is an indispensable driver for the energy transition, provided it is networked, secure and practical.

The Energy Innovation Center is thus positioning itself as a central player in shaping the energy transition in Lusatia. With over 100 researchers and more than 40 partners, digitalization will continue to play a key role in the development of sustainable energy solutions. In its study “Digitization of the Energy System – 14 Theses for Success”, the Fraunhofer Cluster CINES emphasizes that digital technologies are crucial for renewable energies and provide concrete recommendations for action for those involved in the energy system. The work of the EIZ correlates strongly with the recommendations of this study, which sees digitalization as part of a climate-neutral energy industry fraunhofer.de shows.
