Excellent teaching: Rothkegel and the best seminars at the University of Potsdam!
This year, the University of Potsdam is honoring outstanding teachers from its Faculty of Human Sciences. On May 8, 2025, it was announced that Dr. phil. Lars Rothkegel is awarded the faculty teaching award. Rothkegel, who studied at the University of Potsdam, specialized in clinical psychology and returned as a postdoc, brilliantly met the students' expectations in his seminars on special diseases and procedures as well as in his practical seminar on psychotherapy in adults. These awards are not only a recognition of the excellent teaching, but also an expression of the need to continuously improve and develop the quality of the courses.
The discussion about the benefits of evaluating courses is becoming increasingly important. Student feedback is increasingly coming into focus as it is crucial for the quality of teaching. Successful teachers, like Rothkegel, emphasize the importance of addressing students' problems and fears. This also includes the preference for face-to-face events, which are preferred over online formats, in order to be able to respond more specifically to the needs of the students.
Teaching prizes and awards
The teaching prizes of the Faculty of Human Sciences were awarded in several categories. In addition to Dr. Lars Rothkegel took Dr. phil. Stefanie Bosse took second place with her seminars on primary schools, followed by Peter Horn, who was awarded for his seminar “Fundamentals of Linguistics”. These honors are part of the Humanities Faculty Festival, which will take place on July 10th on the Golm campus. At a time when the quality of teaching is more than ever at the center of discussions, the importance of student course evaluation referred. According to a book chapter on the basics, findings and methodological pitfalls of LVE, these evaluation methods are crucial for recording and continuously improving teaching quality.
The topic of teaching quality is also addressed in a research paper that discusses key requirements for measuring teaching quality. This points out the limits of measurability caused by distortions and selection effects.
