Potsdam as a health location: strengthening cooperation for the future!

The “Health Potsdam” exchange forum took place in Potsdam on June 30, 2025 in the Villa Bergmann. The event, which was attended by over 80 guests, was organized by the Ernst von Bergmann Clinic, the University of Potsdam and the HMU Health and Medical University. The aim of this meeting was to make the actors in Potsdam a health location more visible and to promote exchange on various health topics.

Health Potsdam is increasingly perceived as a pioneering health location, generally supported by the expansion of interdisciplinary cooperation between clinics and regional universities, such as uni-potsdam.de reported. The event focused on crucial topics such as the challenges in medical care, the training and further education of doctors as well as medical-related research and health sciences. The focus was also on opening up new perspectives.

Program and keynote speakers

The program included short lectures from leading institutions and a panel discussion with representatives of the partners involved. The welcoming words were given by Michael Zaske, head of the health department at the Ministry of Health and Social Affairs in the state of Brandenburg, and Brigitte Meier, deputy for health and social affairs in the state capital Potsdam. Furthermore, Dr. jur. Daniel Sobotta, Managing Director of the Brandenburg Medical Association, about medical care in Brandenburg.

The event not only offered a platform for exchange, but also the opportunity to make contacts and build networks. The forum was organized by Dr. med. Karin Hochbaum, the medical director of the Ernst von Bergmann Clinic, who is also a board member of the Alliance of Large Municipal Hospitals.

Cooperation goals and plans

The Ernst von Bergmann Clinic intends to further develop into a university hospital and will thus attract students, doctors and researchers to Potsdam. It has been an academic teaching hospital for almost six years. The cooperation with the HMU will result in at least 100 trained doctors per year from 2026. The first 152 students began studying human medicine at the HMU in the winter semester of 2020/21. The HMU focuses on basic, translational and intervention research.

In order to strengthen the visibility and cooperation between the clinic, medical universities and other care stakeholders, a declaration of intent was signed between the University of Potsdam and the Ernst von Bergmann Clinic. The President of the University of Potsdam, Prof. Oliver Günther, emphasized the need for this interdisciplinary collaboration to ensure an optimal care structure for patients.

With the new clinic building, the Brandenburg state government plans to intensify clinical research and develop innovative therapy offerings in order to further strengthen Potsdam as a healthcare location evb-gesundheit.de supplemented.

Overall, the event illustrates how important mutual support and exchange between the different players in the health sector are in order to meet the challenges of modern medical care and make health care in Potsdam fit for the future.
