Matriculation ceremony: MHB welcomes 130 new students in Neuruppin!

On April 4, 2025 took place at the Brandenburg Theodor Fontane Medical School (MHB) A matriculation ceremony took place in Neuruppin, welcoming around 130 new students. Among the newly enrolled students are 69 doctors, 41 bachelor's students in psychology and 20 master's students in psychotherapy.

The President of the MHB, Prof. Hans-Uwe Simon, took the opportunity to congratulate the new students and emphasize that this was the beginning of an important phase in their lives. He emphasized that the medical studies at the MHB are strongly oriented towards clinical practice and that the university is the first university in Germany to offer new, approved courses in psychology. He also encouraged students to become actively involved in the university community.

Insight into the MHB and its development

The MHB is celebrating its tenth anniversary this year. During this period, the university has established itself with a network of three university hospitals and four campus locations in Bernau, Brandenburg an der Havel, Neuruppin and Rüdersdorf. The MHB currently has around 1,110 students and places a particular focus on innovative, practical medical training.

The MHB receives political support, especially from the President of the State Parliament, Prof. Ulrike Liedtke, who praised the university's excellent reputation. She also discussed the upcoming cuts in state funding for the MHB, with Prime Minister Dietmar Woidke pledging his support. Prof. Dr. Thomas Stamm, Vice Dean of the MHB, emphasized the university's role as a training and research facility that is not profit-oriented. The challenges presented by digitalization, artificial intelligence and social changes must be taken into account.

Student life and offers

The students themselves reported on their experience and welcomed the new freshmen. Daniel Krüger, who is studying for a master's degree in clinical psychology, and Ilias Aasim, a medical student in the 4th semester, emphasized the importance of community and mutual support. They also invited the new students to an upcoming charity soccer tournament in May.

The MHB offers a bachelor's degree program (B.Sc.) for future psychotherapists that is compliant with the medical license. This course of study is characterized by a close connection to clinical practice. Among other things, students complete orientation internships and clinical days in cooperation clinics, while they are supported in teamwork and communication through TRIK seminars. Problem-oriented learning (PBL) is also part of the program in order to achieve application-related learning goals and to train the students' communication and counseling skills.

The enrollment event was moderated by Carla Kniestedt and supplemented by music from the Berlin Jazz Ensemble. On this day, well wishes were also expressed to Prof. Johannes Albes, who was unable to be present due to illness. The MHB promises better healthcare and wants to promote an innovative region for Brandenburg.

Further information about the MHB's courses and offerings is available on the university's website, which also provides course plans and module handbooks. While the MHB continues to grow, the goal remains to ensure high quality education in the fields of medicine and psychology.
