Annual conference on modernization: Experts discuss Eastern Europe in transition

On April 30, 2025, the Viadrina Center of Polish and Ukrainian Studies (VCPU) announces its upcoming annual conference, which will take place on May 22 and 23. Under the title "Between Hope and Reality. Modernization and Transformation in Central and Eastern Europe", around 60 international scientists are expected to discuss important topics on political, economic and cultural transformation in Central and Eastern Europe.

A particular focus of the conference is on Ukraine and the current modernization processes that were triggered by the Russian war of aggression. These processes include migration, EU integration and socio-economic change in the region. The findings from these discussions could be groundbreaking for the future development of the countries involved.

Research project and exhibition

The event also marks the conclusion of the seven-year “Mod-Block-DDR” research project. On the occasion of this graduation, an exhibition will open on May 22nd at 6:00 p.m. in the Viadrina loge house, Logenstraße 11. This exhibition addresses the socialist modernization in the GDR and the People's Republic of Poland and highlights the connections between planning specifications, productivity and the obstacles to innovation at that time.

Another aspect of the exhibition is the connection between socialism and contemporary entrepreneurship in Poland. The information and exhibits are intended to provide a deeper understanding of the challenges and achievements of the socialist era and build a bridge to modern reality.

Participation and media information

Interested parties can register for the conference by May 16th by sending an email to walerski@europa-uni.de. In addition, VCPU experts are available for interviews and background discussions. Journalists can also register to make appointments by sending an email to presse@europa-uni.de or walerski@europa-uni.de.

The conference promises to be a platform for important dialogues and the exchange of innovative ideas, helping to deepen understanding of the region and its complex transformations. The event will be attended by both academics and practitioners from various fields who aim to further advance developments in Central and Eastern Europe.
