AI Month 2025: Digital workshop for teachers in focus!

AI Month, a cooperation between the Multimedia Center/IKMZ and the KI@MINT project, starts on May 7, 2025 at the BTU Cottbus-Senftenberg. The aim of this initiative is to shed more light on possibilities and developments in the field of artificial intelligence (AI) and to make university teaching fit for the future. As part of weekly events that take place online via Webex every Thursday from 10:50 a.m. to 11:10 a.m., those interested can expand their knowledge of AI and engage with current topics.

The events begin on May 8, 2025 with the topic “BTU.HAWKI – Access to Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) at BTU”. Further dates are May 15, 2025, when a student perspective on AI will be discussed in an interview, and May 22, 2025, when a research note on the AI-supported creation of a knowledge graph will be presented.

Creative perspectives on AI in everyday work

From May 27, 2025, the “AI workshop for everyday work” will follow, which takes place on Tuesdays from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. This workshop offers topics such as the use of AI text generators such as ChatGPT, support from AI in everyday office life and the use of AI in a teaching context. In addition, an open space will be set up to provide space for application notes on AI applications. The target group is university lecturers who have the opportunity to exchange ideas about current developments and possible uses of AI.

According to the University of Kiel, AI-based technologies are becoming increasingly important in university teaching. Systems such as ChatGPT in particular represent both opportunities and challenges for teachers. In order to benefit from these technologies, university teachers should critically reflect on the possibilities and risks and test their application in the classroom. It is crucial that the use of AI applications in exams is communicated transparently, as unauthorized applications are considered an inadmissible tool and, in the worst case, can be classified as an attempt to cheat. Students are obliged to indicate all aids used in accordance with Section 10 Paragraph 6 PVO.

Collaboration and exchange via AI

The form of the examination is specified in the respective subject examination regulations, and teachers may be able to adapt examination questions to take the use of AI into account. However, it should be noted that current AI applications are not error-free and often have problems distinguishing between fact and fiction. In addition, these systems often access outdated databases, meaning scientific accuracy is not always guaranteed.

Furthermore, a focus group called “Generative AI” was founded at the Christian Albrechts University in Kiel in the summer of 2023. This group, consisting of teachers, students and employees, is dedicated to the interdisciplinary examination of the effects of AI on teaching and research as well as the discussion of relevant legal and ethical issues.

Overall, the AI Month at the BTU Cottbus-Senftenberg offers both an exciting platform for knowledge transfer and a space for exchange and networking among teachers. The invitation to participate is open and will be gladly accepted by everyone involved.
