Viadrina: A Short History

The European University Viadrina Founded in 1991, it is a modern institution that traces its roots to the first university of Francfort-sur-l'Oder, which existed from 1506 to 1811. Her name “Viadrina” means “that belongs to the Oder” in Latin. The university has established itself as one of the smallest state universities in Germany, with around 5,587 students, of which more than 1,500 come from Poland.

Among the renowned alumni of the original Viadrina are important personalities such as Alexander and Wilhelm von Humboldt and Heinrich von Kleist. After the Second World War, only ruins remained of the old university, while the entrance portal was preserved as a monument.

Current events and exhibitions

In addition to the book launch, there will be a workshop on the topic “How do you curate festivals or exhibitions?” This will be held on Thursday, April 24th, at 2 p.m. in room 201 b of the main building. The speakers Nora Weise and Florian Vogel from the Kleist Forum will share their knowledge and experiences.

There are currently two exhibitions on display at the university. The first, “Kant & Königsberg,” commemorates the 301st birthday of Immanuel Kant and includes child-friendly illustrations. This can be viewed since April 8th in the Gräfin Dönhoff building, Europaplatz 1, 1st floor. The second exhibition, “Oder-Los”, shows photographs of the Oder river landscape by Oleksandra Bienert, taken between 2020 and 2021, also in the Gräfin Dönhoff building.

Viadrina offers various study programs for students and interested parties. The Faculty of Cultural Studies has over 2,000 students and offers a variety of master's programs in areas such as intercultural communication, European cultural history and cultural management. The Faculty of Law with classic German degrees and the Faculty of Economics with international business courses also enrich the offering.

The Study landscape in Germany is dynamic with over 650 university locations and more than 20,000 study programs. Prospective students have the opportunity to create a personal overview of their favorites and manage them conveniently.

Overall, the Viadrina not only has an exciting history and a diverse range of offerings, but also remains a central place for intercultural encounters and educational initiatives in Brandenburg.
