MHB student Rita Bilal conquers the dental board!

On May 24, 2025, Rita Bilal, a committed student at the Brandenburg Theodor Fontane Medical School (MHB), was elected to the board of the Federal Association of Dental Medicine Students in Germany (bdzm) at the Federal Student Council Conference (BuFaTa) in Jena. The federal student council conference was organized by the student council of the University of Jena and attracted 31 representatives and almost 250 participants. The election of Bilal is an important step for the MHB, as it makes it visible in the nationwide student representation.

Rita Bilal is part of the first cohort of the dentistry course at the MHB, which started in April 2024. In her new role, she will act as auditor at BdZM, an organization founded in 1990 and operating as a registered non-profit organization since 2005. The bdzm represents approximately 15,000 students of dentistry, oral and maxillofacial medicine at 30 locations in Germany.

Structures and goals of the BdZM

The new board of the bdzm consists of a total of five members who were elected for a two-year term. The central task of the new committee is to continue the association's work, strengthen communication between the student councils and build an information platform. In addition, promoting international cooperation is a key concern of the Board of Directors.

The BdZm has committed itself to clear goals, which include, among other things, the psychological and financial relief of students. Particular challenges that are in focus are the implementation of the new licensing regulations for dentists (AOZ) and the upcoming state examinations. The volunteer board currently consists of six students who come from five locations in Germany and is therefore well positioned to meet these challenges.

Communication and collaboration

The BdZM maintains close contacts with various organizations that are important for dentistry in Germany. These include, among others, the Federal Dental Association (BZÄK), the National Association of Statutory Health Insurance Dentists (KZBV) and the Federal Ministry of Health (BMG). The association magazine “Dental Fresh” is published quarterly and an email newsletter called “Up To Date” also appears every six weeks to keep members informed.

The Federal Student Council Conference (BuFaTa) takes place every six months and offers a platform for exchange among students from the dental student councils. The importance of this event is clear from the high number of participants, which shows how important the topics are for the students.

Given the challenges that dental students currently have to overcome, the election of Rita Bilal is a strong sign of the commitment and representation of the interests of this group of students. With its election, the MHB not only has a voice in the bdzm, but also the opportunity to actively participate in shaping the future-oriented agenda of dentistry in Germany.

The election of Rita Bilal and the associated goals of the entire board mark a forward-looking step for dentistry in Germany.
