New research building in Potsdam: 39 million for healthy nutrition!
On August 7, 2025, the new building for the Institute of Nutritional Science at the University of Potsdam will be inaugurated at the Rehbrücke location. The development of the Gerty Cori House represents a significant advance in research into new nutritional strategies to promote healthy aging. This new building will be constructed on an area of 2,400 square meters, with 30 percent of the space intended for office space and 70 percent for research and laboratory activities. The funding comes from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and the state of Brandenburg, with a total cost of 39 million euros.
Construction is scheduled to begin at the end of 2025, while completion is targeted for August 2028. This initiative is not only important for the University of Potsdam, but also for the entire region and its research scene.
Financing and collaboration
The financing of the new building is largely supported by 10 million euros each from the Ministry of Science, Research and Culture of the State of Brandenburg (MWFK) and the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). The project team highlights the successful cooperation of all those involved, which made it possible to ensure both on-time completion and adherence to the budget. Dr. Birgit Schröder-Smeibidl, administrative director of the German Institute for Nutritional Research (DIfE), praised the solution-oriented collaboration, which was successful despite the challenges posed by the current hardware store situation and the pandemic.
PGMM Dresden took over responsibility for wastewater, water and gas systems as well as building automation, while the laboratory technology was handled by the Hamburg branch. The various service phases 1 to 8 were comprehensively worked on for this project, which makes clear the complexity and structural requirements that arise from the different types of use.
Inauguration and outlook
The ceremonial inauguration of the Gerty Cori House will include, among others, Dr. Manja Schüle, Dr. Birgit Schröder-Smeibidl, Prof. Tilman Grune, Katja Döpke and Prof. Matthias Beller will be present. This event underlines the importance of the new building for the scientific community and the promotion of innovative research.
The new building and the associated projects are in line with the objectives of the “Horizon Europe” framework program, which aims to strengthen the EU's scientific and technical foundations and increase competitiveness. Within this program, around 15 percent of the funding goes to international projects in order to network the research landscapes in Europe and overcome fragmentation. Partnerships in the health sector are intended to create even more innovative research approaches that improve the perspectives on health care.
Overall, the development of the Institute of Nutritional Science is not only an impressive example of successful research in Germany, but also makes a significant contribution to strengthening the European research area. This is particularly clear in the projects planned within the framework of Horizon Europe and other European partnerships that address various health challenges.
