New Professor for Digital Health at HPI: The path to better solutions!
On October 1, 2025, the Hasso Plattner Institute (HPI) expanded its expertise in the field of digital health by appointing Prof. Dr. med. Katarina Braune expands. She will take over the professorship for “Digital Health – Non-Communicable Diseases”. This is a further step in the development of the joint Digital Engineering Faculty of HPI and the University of Potsdam.
Prof. Braune brings impressive qualifications to this new position. As a specialist in pediatric and adolescent medicine, diabetologist and qualified medical IT specialist, she has specialized in the development of digital solutions for chronic, non-communicable diseases, especially diabetes mellitus. She previously worked at the Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin, where she was co-head of the Digital Transformation & Applications working group. Your interdisciplinary team at HPI will advance practice-oriented research and teaching.
Research focus and personal motivation
Prof. Braune's research focuses on AI-supported assistance systems, personalized therapies and open data platforms. Their goal is to close gaps in care and make digital innovations, which affect around 70 percent of all deaths worldwide, accessible to everyone. Chronic non-communicable diseases are a global challenge and digital technologies have the potential to significantly improve prevention, early detection and treatment if they are designed to be equitable and understandable.
Prof. Braune herself has lived with type 1 diabetes since childhood, which has a lasting impact on her research. She is actively involved in the international diabetes online community in order to better understand the challenges and needs of those affected and to incorporate them into her work. Her personal experience motivates her to develop digital health solutions that meet the specific needs of patients.
Academic Growth and Future Prospects
With the appointment of Prof. Braune, the HPI is continuing its course of academic growth, particularly in the area of digital health. The institute already has plans for another professorship in this discipline in order to address the increasingly important challenges in digital healthcare even more comprehensively. The expansion of research and teaching capacities aims to meet the global need for innovative and effective digital solutions.
