New launch office in Babelsberg: Talents conquer the film world!
The Babelsberg start office is entering its fifth year with fresh ideas and two new film projects. Since its opening in 2019, the office has established itself as a central initiative of Studio Babelsberg and the Babelsberg KONRAD WOLF Film University. Creative talents are encouraged here and given the opportunity to realize innovative film projects. The program is supported by Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg GmbH and the Investitionsbank des Landes Brandenburg (ILB) and offers scholarships for alumni of the film university.
Each of the two teams that are currently being supported by the start office has access to a coworking space in the Marlene-Dietrich-Halle on the Studio Babelsberg site. Together they can access financial resources of 19,000 euros each as well as valuable mentors who will help them implement their creative concepts.
The projects in detail
The first team consists of the two film university graduates Gitte Hellwig and Henrike Rothe, who were trained in animation directing, as well as Lisa Neubauer. You are working on the animated series “Urban Nature (AT)”, which deals with the topic of wild animals reclaiming urban spaces. The focus of the plot is a young fox who finds himself in a conflict between humans and animals. The producers' goal is to develop the series, which includes TV broadcast, online exploitation models and links to scientific communication. A collaboration with the University of Potsdam is planned to realize a first teaser to finance a season with six episodes.
The second team consists of Laura Klippel and Britta Strampe, the founders of the production company Bandenfilm. Together with director Sophie Linnenbaum and screenwriter Michael Fetter Nathansky, they are working on their debut project, the feature film “SUBTEXT (AT)”. The film focuses on outsiders in a perfect world and highlights issues of discrimination and resistance. To support the visual effects, cooperation with the Film University's Creative Technologies course is planned.
The development of the starting office
The Startbüro Babelsberg initiative is based on the successful model that was launched in 2015. Originally, a single funding was planned, but due to the great interest and the many qualified applications, a second team was accepted from 2016. The first success was not long in coming: in 2016, Isabell Šuba with her project “On the Edge of Colors” and Anna Levinson with the animated documentary “Who was Dr. Dr. Lustig?” recognized as winning teams. These projects demonstrate the diversity of ideas and talent being developed in Babelsberg.
Further support for the film industry in Germany is based on annual funding amounts of around 44 million euros. These funds aim to secure the structure of the German film industry and strengthen German filmmaking on a national and international level. In accordance with the current Film Funding Act (FFG), the Film Funding Agency (FFA) supports the allocation of funding to promote the diversity and quality of film production in Germany.
With these new projects and the dedicated teams, another innovative step in the creative process is about to take place. The Babelsberg start office shows that the region remains an important player in the film and media landscape.
