Obesity is considered one of the most pressing medical challenges of today. The 3rd Potsdam Prevention Symposium, organized by Prof. Dr. med. Heinz Völler devotes himself to this complex topic with an interdisciplinary approach. On Wednesday, May 7, 2025, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., the science floor in the Potsdam Education Forum will be transformed into a forum for expertise and exchange. Admission is free, but registration by email is required.

Insights into therapeutic approaches
Several experts will speak at the symposium. Prof. Dr. rer. nat. For example, André Kleinridders will explain why people become overweight and how they maintain their weight. Prof. Dr. phil. Petra Warschburger addresses early preventive measures for children. In addition, Dr. med. Regina Gaub will present modern therapy options for people with obesity and diabetes.
Another focus is on drug options for weight loss, presented by Prof. Dr. med. Rona Reibis. Wael Eskander will explain when surgical procedures should be considered as viable options. The symposium therefore offers comprehensive information that is not only scientifically based, but also provides practical solutions.
Cardiometabolic risks
Particular attention is also paid to the cardiometabolic risk factors that are often associated with obesity. The Brandenburg Faculty of Health Sciences, which was founded in 2018, is heavily involved in the event. Its goal is to develop new types of medical, nursing and medical technology care offerings as well as innovative study programs. In cooperation with other universities and research institutions, the aim is to contribute to improving medical care in Brandenburg.
