Prof. Dr. Sven Michel became President of the on July 21, 2025 German-Arab University Conference (DAH) chosen. This decision was made by representatives from 22 Arab embassies in Germany. His term will last four years until June 2029.
The DAH has set itself the goal of expanding scientific cooperation between German universities and the Arab world. This includes the development of joint research projects, study programs and exchange programs. Prof. Michel will be responsible for representing the DAH and strategic direction. He will also initiate and maintain partnerships and promote intercultural understanding.
Commitment to the educational landscape
Prof. Michel heads the Department of Therapeutic Sciences II at the BTU and is actively committed to the educational needs of Arab young people and students, especially those from crisis regions. The Middle East and North Africa region offers over 500 universities and has around nine million students. In order to strengthen this educational landscape, he signed a cooperation agreement with Al Zahrawi University in Karbala, Iraq, in March 2025. This agreement will be part of the new Medical Strategy 2030 – Upper Lusatia.
To achieve his goals, Prof. Michel emphasizes the importance of an institution that meets the educational needs of Arab universities. This was underpinned by an agreement to work more closely with Abdulaziz Al Mikhlafi, General Secretary of the Ghorfa. The DAH board also announced a visit to the Syrian embassy to discuss the situation of universities in Syria. Planned events include a kick-off meeting for educational cooperation with Syrian and Iraqi universities as well as a specialist symposium for medical professionals in Germany.
Intercultural exchange and future projects
Additionally, as part of the DAAD program University dialogue with the Islamic world organized a winter school in Oman, which will take place in January 2024. At this event, participants from Germany, Oman and Tunisia will discuss high culture and everyday culture as well as cultural identities. This conference will focus on the topic “Borders and border crossings in literary expressions”.
The “Ana wa-ant” project, which has been promoting intercultural dialogue since 2022, also contributes to improving language skills and understanding between cultures. This program is intended to strengthen cooperation between universities from the German and Islamic countries, which includes 21 collaborations with partners from 13 Islamic countries. Planned calls for tenders for new projects are scheduled for mid-2024, with a funding period of two years.
