Sarah Speck: New Professor of Cultural Sociology at Viadrina!

On March 31, 2025, Prof. Dr. Sarah Speck will take up the professorship for comparative cultural sociology at the European University Viadrina in Frankfurt (Oder) on April 1, 2025. She moves from the Goethe University Frankfurt am Main, where she most recently worked as a professor of sociology with a focus on women's and gender studies. For her, her move marks an important step in viewing the upcoming new position as opening up a great deal of creative freedom.

Speck brings extensive experience in gender studies, a field that she would like to develop not only academically but also in public discussions. In her new role, she plans to invest more energy in teaching and devote more of her time to research. She finds a smaller university to be a particularly attractive space for thinking.

Academic backgrounds

Prof. Dr. Sarah Speck studied applied cultural studies at the Leuphana University of Lüneburg and completed her doctorate at the Humboldt University in Berlin on the topic of “professional motherhood” in SOS Children's Villages. Her academic career took her through positions at the Technical University of Darmstadt, the Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen and the University of Osnabrück.

Before her time at Goethe University, Speck was deputy director of the Institute for Social Research in Frankfurt am Main and the Cornelia Goethe Center. Since 2020 she has been a professor at Goethe University and has made crucial contributions to research and teaching there.

Current research projects

In the summer semester of 2025, she plans to offer an introduction to gender studies and a seminar on materialist feminism. These courses are not only intended to impart knowledge, but also to stimulate critical discourse and actively involve students.

Speck's expertise and commitment to gender studies are not only important for Viadrina, but also contribute to the broader discussion about gender issues in society. Her professional experiences and research approaches represent a commitment to a well-founded and critical approach to highly topical social issues.

Further information about the relevance of gender studies can be found in Hirschauer's studies, which deepen the concept and place it in various social contexts ( Gender open ). Finally, the university offers a further overview of comprehensive literature sources on gender studies that provide insightful information for interested parties and students ( AU ).
