Social work shapes home: A look at Lusatia 2025!

The Brandenburg Technical University of Cottbus-Senftenberg (BTU) is organizing an exciting transfer series called “Confidence: Homeland?!”. This initiative aims to promote thinking about home through exchange between science, practice and civil society. Given the complex issues that shape modern society, it is essential to illuminate the different perspectives of citizens, social workers and researchers. The series includes four events planned until early July 2025.

The first date in the series is imminent: “Home & Belonging” will take place on May 13, 2025 at 5 p.m. in the Kunsthalle Lausitz in Cottbus. Further events will follow: “Home & Life Story” on May 27, 2025, “Home & Spaces” on June 10, 2025, “Home & Rituals” on July 1, 2025 and “Home & Sustainability” on July 8, 2025. These events are free and open to anyone interested. In this context, home is viewed as an individual concept that touches on fundamental desires for the “good life”.

The role of social work

A central concern of the event series is the role of social work in shaping home. Social work supports people who need temporary or permanent help. It helps them to find their way in their environment and to gain a sense of meaning, identity and well-being. The challenges facing social work are complex. These include aspects such as social acceleration, individualization and social inequality, which often make access to the necessary resources more difficult.

As [slideserve.com] describes, the social conditions are critical. The flexibilization of working relationships, the loss of social ties and the increase in low wages are just some of the challenges that social workers are confronted with. These factors contribute to increased pressure on social work, which increasingly has to move between economic requirements and the needs of people in a changing society.

A social change in Lusatia

Against the background of structural change, demographic change and digitalization in Lusatia, it is of utmost importance to understand the concept of home as a dynamic process. Home is understood as a variety of social processes that can be designed to promote communities and support people in difficult life situations. In this project, the BTU is cooperating with the Association of German Scientists (VDW) in order to bring different perspectives into the discussion.

The project “AlterPerimentale – Alter-Peripherie-Experiment” is part of the program line “T!Raum – TransferRäume for the future of regions”, which is funded by the BMBF. These programs aim to intensify the exchange between science and practice and to develop innovative solutions to local challenges. The events offer a platform for dialogue and mutual learning between different actors in civil society.

The coins in social work require a rethink. The focus is shifting from pure caring to greater involvement of all stakeholders and a collaborative approach to meet the challenges of the modern world. In this context it becomes clear: creating home is more than a geographical concept; it is a social process - and the BTU events are an important step in this direction.
