Viadrina invites you: Exciting online events on sustainability!
On March 8, 2025, the European University Viadrina Frankfurt (Oder) is offering a variety of events that are both academic and socially relevant. In the coming week, the focus will be on the Science Café, which will take place on Monday, March 10th at 1:00 p.m. This online event is organized by the European Reform University Alliance (ERUA) and aims to promote dialogue between researchers and regional actors in the German-Polish border region. The topic is “Collaborative Research for Regional Sustainability” and offers space for questions and discussions.
In addition, online events on compliance topics will take place on the same day, March 10th, and on Wednesday, March 12th. These are organized by the Viadrina Compliance Center and deal with current developments in antitrust law, supply chain issues and the fight against money laundering and corruption. Sessions are also scheduled from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.
Viadrina in the context of Ukraine reconstruction
Another event that deserves special attention is the event “Viadrina Expertise in Café Kyiv” on Tuesday, March 11th. This event will highlight various aspects of freedom, security and reconstruction in Ukraine. Experts like Dr. Susann Worschech and Prof. Dr. Andrii Portnov will discuss topics such as strategic partnership and the challenges of exile and return. These conversations are part of a broader discussion about Ukraine's role in Europe, particularly in relation to climate protection and the need for green transformations during and after the war.
The Ukrainian Climate Office (UCO), which was officially launched in 2022, plays a central role in this issue. It was created to promote Ukraine's climate neutrality by 2060 and support the development of climate change capacity. The need for such an institution arises from the enormous challenges posed by war, particularly the destruction of infrastructure and a shortage of skilled workers. The UCO is intended to act as an operational extension of the Ministry of the Environment and coordinate key climate initiatives.
Education and community offerings
Similar educational and community offerings will also be offered on Tuesday, March 11th, with the “German-Polish Senior Citizens’ Academy”. This event includes a lecture about the Viadrina University Library, followed by a tour of the library. Particular attention is paid to bilingual implementation in German and Polish in order to appeal to as many participants as possible.
Another highlight is the “Young Business Night” on Friday, March 14th, which is organized by the Wirtschaftsjunioren Ostbrandenburg and focuses on young entrepreneurs. This event is intended not only to promote exchange between founders, but also to help create a sustainable economic environment in the region.
As part of the cultural and educational initiatives, the exhibition “Oder-Los” is presented, which shows photographs of the Oder river landscape and takes place in the University's Gräfin Dönhoff building. These works, created between 2020 and 2021, offer a creative look at regional nature and its meaning.
The simultaneous focus on education, science and ecological resilience underlines Viadrina's ambitions to not only promote academic excellence, but also to actively influence the regional and international discourse on sustainability and reconstruction.
