Virtual exhibition celebrates strong Brandenburg women in medicine

The Brandenburg Theodor Fontane Medical School (MHB) recently celebrated its tenth anniversary with an impressive exhibition that took place in the Neuruppin Museum. This exhibition, which was on view from October 2024 to January 2025, has now also found its way into the digital world. Loud MHB Those interested can now visit the show virtually to enable those who were unable to see them in person to take part.

A highlight of the online exhibition is the newly added chapter “Brandenburg Women in Medicine”, which was expanded on International Women’s Day. This supplement aims to highlight the achievements of women at the MHB and draw attention to the challenges of gender equality policy. The personalities featured include Prof. Dr. Irene Hinterseher, Vice President of the MHB, and Prof. Dr. Stefanie Oess, a well-known professor of biochemistry, and Anna Marie Kuhnow, the first woman to study medicine in Switzerland.

The MHB students contribute to our success

The partial exhibition, which places a special focus on female doctors, was created by students of human medicine as part of an elective seminar. The committed young scientists, including Konstantin Siegler, Marlene Daniels and Emily Jeschke, have made valuable contributions. Prof. Dr. Andreas Jüttemann, the MHB's medical historian, also plans to add other important female personalities to the exhibition. Suggestions for additions are warmly welcome.

A brief look back at the founding of the MHB

The MHB was officially founded on October 28, 2014 with the aim of creating a medical educational institution in Brandenburg. This initiative was particularly relevant because there was no medical faculty in the state of Brandenburg after the political change in 1990. It was founded after extensive preparations and an application for state recognition in 2012, with study operations ultimately starting in the winter semester of 2014/15.

Over the years, the MHB has developed into a private medical university with four campuses in Brandenburg. Teaching began in the summer semester of 2015 with 48 medical students and 24 psychology students. The university cooperates with several clinics, including the University Hospital of Brandenburg an der Havel and the Ruppin Clinics.

The continuous development and establishment of the MHB in the region is supported by the commitment of the academic leadership, most recently President Hans-Uwe Simon, who has been in office since September 1, 2021. This development stands in contrast to the beginning, when the university was confronted with reasons and challenges in finding a wide variety of cooperation partners. More and more students are choosing the training, which is supported by a large number of teaching hospitals in Brandenburg and Saxony-Anhalt.

The virtual exhibition and ongoing efforts to make the role of women in medicine visible underscore the MHB's dynamic progress and commitment to equality and innovation in medical education.
