World Environment Day: Together for a clean future in Frankfurt!
On June 5, 2025, an extensive World Environment Day took place at the European University Viadrina, organized by the Cultural Studies Student Council in collaboration with the university groups UNICEF and Students for Climate Justice. The meeting point for the dedicated helpers was the foyer of the Gräfin Dönhoff building. The event started at 4 p.m. and focused on cleaning the island of Ziegenwerder. Trash bags and gloves were provided to enable participants to complete the cleanup efficiently. This initiative highlights the university community's commitment to environmental protection and sustainability, a cause that is supported by numerous other events at the university.
A variety of events in the coming days
An online consultation for the KIU Research Fellowships is scheduled for Tuesday, June 10, 2025. This will take place at 2:30 p.m. and is aimed at interested researchers who are seeking a scholarship for the winter semester of 2025. This event is organized by the Competence Association for Interdisciplinary Ukrainian Studies Frankfurt (Oder) – Berlin (KIU) and takes place via Zoom.
On the same day, a research colloquium will be held later in the evening at 6:15 p.m. in the lodge house. The lecture by Dr. Elisabeth Heigl from the University of Greifswald is entitled “Alimentation strategies for the universities in Greifswald and Königsberg (16th and 17th centuries)” and promises to provide interesting insights into historical educational concepts.

A highlight of the coming week is a panel discussion that will take place on Wednesday, June 11th at 3 p.m. Jens Beige, Dr. Krzysztof Wojciechowski and Oliver Barth, moderated by Dr. Mark Keck-Szajbel. The discussion will be supplemented by simultaneous interpretation into Polish, which increases the accessibility of the topic.
Directly after the panel discussion, at 4:15 p.m., there will be a book presentation of the new work by Dr. Marija Grujić, “Belonging in Unhomely Homelands,” will take place in the Senate Hall. Registrations are required for participation.
Another cultural highlight on June 11th is the film screening of “Wicked: Part I” at 6 p.m., which will be presented by the organizer ViaKino in lecture hall 06 of the Gräfin Dönhoff building.

Anyone interested is cordially invited to take part in this important final lecture.
The weekend of June 13th and 14th offers the student body the UNITHEA theater festival, which has the motto Passion / passion / pasja and is held at various locations in the twin cities of Frankfurt (Oder) and Słubice. The festival offers a platform for young talent and is organized by the university's students.
Exhibitions and long-term events
In addition, the European University Viadrina presents a variety of exhibitions that are available until the end of August 2025. These include the exhibition “Mod-Block-DDR”, which deals with modernization blockages in the economy and science of the GDR, as well as “Where is this East Germany?”, which addresses challenging aspects and prejudices against East Germany.
The traveling exhibition “Kant & Königsberg”, which began on April 8th, focuses on Immanuel Kant and his hometown of Königsberg. The exhibition “Some Were Neighbors,” which deals with the Holocaust and the role of ordinary people, will also be on view until December 30, 2025. Finally, the exhibition “Oder-Los”, which shows photographs of the Oder river landscape by Oleksandra Bienert, ends on June 13th.
These vivid events and exhibitions provide the university community with a valuable opportunity for reflection, cultural exchange and promoting awareness of environmental and historical issues.
