Science up close: Students research future energy in Cottbus!

On Monday, October 6, 2025, the DLR_School_Lab at the BTU Cottbus-Senftenberg is expecting a group of 11th grade students from the Erwin-Strittmatter-Gymnasium Spremberg. This excursion offers participants the opportunity to experience physics and technology up close. Under professional guidance, students can experiment and deal with topics such as electrochemistry, heat storage and solar energy. The DLR reported that The offer is free of charge and promises a practical and varied day of science.

The DLR_School_Lab has set itself the goal of introducing children and young people to the world of research. Every year around 40,000 students are looked after at various locations in Germany. There are a total of 16 DLR SchoolLab locations that provide modern research facilities and high-tech equipment. These are tailored to the age groups and level of knowledge of the school classes. In addition to the practical experience that the students gain, the teachers also benefit because they can enrich scientific and technical lessons through such visits. The DLR actively promotes young talent in the natural sciences and technology.

Diverse activities

During their visit, the students can not only experiment, but can also look forward to a variety of events during the theme month in Spremberg. From October 1st to November 7th, 2025, the topic of future energy will shed light on various perspectives. Physics shows, lectures and excursions are planned, among other things. A quiz evening and a talk session are also planned to deepen the topics in an interactive way. The aim is to sensitize and interest students in the challenges of energy supply in the future.

The DLR School Labs offer students from the 7th grade onwards the opportunity to get to know scientific working methods and experience research up close. This includes not only the topics of aviation and space travel, but also energy, transport and security. The modern devices and systems of the DLR_School_Lab are designed to provide students with practical applications of theoretical knowledge. At the TU Dortmund Students also have the opportunity to visit a particle accelerator and thus gain an insight into university life.

Overall, the DLR_School_Lab is an excellent addition to everyday school life and is a valuable opportunity to inspire young people to pursue technical and scientific careers. The activities as part of the excursions and the theme month impressively show how exciting and diverse the world of science can be.
