Fit for the future through education: New certification program at the BTU!
The WandelBAR continuing education program at the BTU Cottbus-Senftenberg represents a new approach to making teaching and advice at universities fit for the future. This program actively promotes the development of so-called future skills, which are of central importance for the requirements of a rapidly changing labor market. The first learning unit entitled “Future Skills Basis Compass – Part 1: Understanding and specifically developing future skills” starts on June 25, 2025. The program is flexible and cost-effective, with participants having the opportunity to take individual modules and acquire digital badges and a quality-assured certificate. Further details can be found on the program website, where the new online course for counselors, which will be offered on June 27 and July 4, 2025, is also advertised.
The relevance of these educational initiatives is underlined by the increasing demands for skills in areas such as digitalization and artificial intelligence. According to the joint initiative of the Future Education Mission, which was launched by the Stifterverband and its partners, there is an urgent need to reform the education system. The goal is to equip more people with the necessary skills that will become indispensable for the future world of work.
An integrative approach to future skills
In October 2024, the Alliance for Future Skills will be launched to increase the proportion of universities that integrate AI skills and future skills into their educational offerings. By participating in one of the four thematic task forces or in the “Future Skills in the World of Work” forum, those interested can actively contribute to shaping this future.
The challenge for universities becomes clear in this transformation. Not only do they have to adapt their curricula, but they also have to create comprehensive training courses in the area of transformative technologies. The integration of future skills should take place across disciplines and through new transdisciplinary study programs in order to meet the requirements of the future labor market.
Strategic challenges and upcoming adjustments
The need to renew teaching and learning formats is evident. The competition for qualified personnel alone, especially digital and big data specialists, requires a strategic realignment. Universities must not only impart new skills, but also develop innovative approaches to research and teaching.
Given the difficulty of finding and retaining talented professionals, increased cooperation with high-tech and data-driven companies is essential. This collaboration will be crucial for curriculum development as well as the recruitment and training of employees in order to successfully master the strategic challenges.
It is clear that the future of education and the world of work are closely linked. Therefore, programs like WandelBAR are not only a step in the right direction, but a necessity in the development of a sustainable academic landscape.
