Educational equality in focus: New exhibition in Bremen and Bremerhaven!
In Bremen and Bremerhaven, there will be an exhibition from May 14th to June 10th, 2025 in the Bremerhaven City Library and from June 13th to August 6th in the Haus der Wissenschaft Bremen that deals with the explosive topic of educational justice. Under the title “Unlock the Future”, the exhibition will offer exciting insights into structural inequalities in the education system and is aimed at a broad target group: children aged six and over, adults and, in particular, decision-makers in education, politics and administration. Entry is free.
The exhibition is led by Professor Sabine Doff from the University of Bremen and has its origins in a scientific study entitled “Expedition on Educational Justice”. Combining qualitative research, including interviews with students and teachers, with visual documentation, this study produced twelve school portraits that demonstrate ways to implement educational equity. These portraits are presented as part of the exhibition and enable visitors to get to know concepts such as recognition, threshold and distributive justice. uni-bremen.de reports that creative solutions and innovative approaches are presented to address the challenges in the education system.
The concern of educational equity
Educational equity is crucial for participation in society. Many children and young people do not receive the school education they need, which severely limits their opportunities for a self-determined future. According to the initiative of unlock-the-future.de Everyone should have the right to a self-designed future and fair opportunities for education - a goal that has not yet been realized for everyone. A high proportion of students experience difficulties in acquiring basic reading skills, as current PISA studies show.
Structural inequalities have led to a significant educational discrepancy, which particularly affects children from economically weaker families or with a migrant background. Over 20% of 15-year-old students in Germany do not reach the basic level of reading skills, which highlights the challenges in the German education system. This situation is caused by sonderpaedagoge.de classified as alarming and underlines the need for action in education policy.
Joint efforts for a fair education system
The need to structurally anchor educational equality in the school system is undisputed. To this end, comprehensive cooperation between schools, politics, science and business is sought. The “Educational Justice Support Alliance” was founded to actively support and promote educational justice. Participating foundations such as the Collegium Förderstiftung and the Stifterverband für die Deutsche Wissenschaft are helping to raise awareness of educational equity and initiate targeted reforms.
The exhibition is not only intended to provide information, but also to actively invite people to engage with the different aspects of educational justice. It is planned for the summer of 2025 that the results of the underlying study will be published as an open access publication by Julius Klinkhardt. Unlock the Future not only offers insights into the current challenges, but also perspectives for a fair educational landscape that enables equal opportunities for everyone.
