God in the digital age: AI is changing our religion!

Digitalization and artificial intelligence (AI) are massively changing the religious landscape. A new research project launched at the universities of Bremen and Würzburg under the name CARD (Conceptualizing Agency, Religion and Digitalization) deals with the effects of these technologies on action and authority in the context of religion. The study, which is interdisciplinary and designed to last three years, is led by Bremen professor Kerstin Radde-Antweiler and Würzburg religious educator Ilona Nord. Together they want to examine the changes in religious agency brought about by digitalization and the use of AI.

Influenced by technologies such as online broadcasts of church services and the use of social media, many religious communities have adapted their communication strategies since the Corona pandemic. The integration of AI into this process is a central concern of the project. The researchers examine how the relationship between humans and God changes when machines are included in the process of religious practices. The first applications of AI in this area include, among other things, the creation of sermons and pastoral apps.

Interdisciplinary research and international collaboration

The CARD project brings together a network of researchers from 13 different disciplines, including theology, religious studies, philosophy, sociology, media studies, computer science and psychology. International partners from the USA, Sweden, Norway and the Netherlands are also integrated into the research network. The focus is on developing a theoretical basis for understanding the actions of people, religion and digital technologies. The results of the research will ultimately be published in a handbook that includes disciplinary perspectives and key concepts.

Another aspect of research is the promotion of young scientists, which is supported by the integration of six young researchers as full members. Working conferences with international experts are also planned to strengthen the visibility of German-speaking research in this innovative area.

AI and its role in religion

The research team is also interested in the question of whether AI systems can exercise religious authority. The analysis of the parallels between AI and religions shows that both areas are capable of offering promises of salvation. These promises are usually based on metaphysical assumptions, such as belief in gods or an afterlife. The dynamics and side effects of these discourses are examined closely as part of the research.

There are already initial examples of the use of AI in a religious context, such as the use of priest robots or mindfulness apps. These new technologies raise fundamental questions about human agency and the role of AI in religious practices.

The CARD project is not only an important step in the study of religion and technology, but also preparation for a larger international research project planned from the end of 2028. It is becoming clear that the interfaces between digital innovation and religious practice are becoming increasingly important and can make a significant contribution to science and society.
