The Innovation Community Urban Health at the University of Bremen is funding innovative urban development to combat climate change with 5 million euros.

Combating climate change: Innovative urban development for healthy living spaces!
On June 23, 2025, the focus will be on the InnovationsCommunity Urban Health (ICUH), which is dedicated to creating healthy living conditions in urban areas. According to the University of Bremen reported, a focus is placed on innovative approaches that are intended to promote health-promoting, equitable and heat-adapted urban development.
The need for creative solutions is becoming increasingly urgent as climate change poses significant challenges for cities. In particular, protection from heat is a central issue that is supported by scientific findings and guiding principles such as environmental justice and sustainability. However, there are obstacles to the practical implementation of these approaches that need to be overcome.
Promotion and support measures
A first Call for Ideas was published to collect innovative, creative and practical concepts for urban development. Funding of around three million euros is available for projects that are to be implemented in both Bremen and the Ruhr area. A second call, which will focus on active mobility, is also being planned.
The ICHU receives total funding of five million euros from the DATIpilot initiative of the Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space (BMFTR) and is therefore one of only 20 funded initiatives out of almost 500 applications across Germany. Partners in this important project are the Institute for Public Health and Nursing Research (IPP) at the University of Bremen and the State Association for Health and Academy for Social Medicine Lower Saxony Bremen e.V. (LVG & AFS). In the Ruhr area, the ICUCH is supported by a cooperation with the Bochum University of Applied Sciences, the Technical University of Dortmund, the Wuppertal Institute for Climate, Environment, Energy and the North Rhine-Westphalia State Center for Health.
Climate change and innovative solutions
The challenges of climate change are becoming increasingly clear. A report from Umweltdesigner.de highlights that climate change has already led to extreme weather events, rising temperatures and melting ice caps. These changes endanger ecosystems, human health, agriculture and the economy.
To counteract these development trends, a shift to a low-carbon economy is essential. Innovative solutions are critical to addressing the myriad challenges posed by climate change. The development of new technologies to reduce emissions and promote renewable energy, such as solar, wind and hydropower, are just some of the approaches being called for.
In addition, sustainable transport options such as electric vehicles and public transport are of great importance. Innovative concepts must also be implemented in construction to increase the energy efficiency of buildings and minimize their ecological footprint. Carbon capture and storage (CCS) technologies and sustainable agriculture are other essential building blocks in the fight against climate change.
However, the implementation of such measures does not only depend on government support; Individual decisions and an sensitized population are crucial to actively combat climate change. It is of great importance to raise awareness of the need for sustainable development and to inspire others to also take responsibility.
Overall, adapting to the challenges of climate change requires innovative and creative solutions that can sustainably improve both cities and the quality of life of their residents. The ICHU has set itself the goal of supporting this transformation and playing a central role in it by offering all interested parties the opportunity to actively participate in shaping a heat-adapted urban future.
