Northwest Alliance: New funding pot strengthens research between Bremen and Oldenburg!
The Northwest Alliance, an association of the universities of Bremen and Oldenburg, today announced the launch of the “NoW – Northwest Alliance Research Fund”. The aim of this new research fund is to intensify cooperation between the two institutions. Researchers can now apply for funding of up to 20,000 euros to advance innovative research projects.
The deadline for applications is expected to be the end of June 2026, as long as funds are available. In this context, there are two central funding lines: “Northwest Impuls” and “Northwest Advanced”, each of which pursues differently focused goals.
Funding lines for scientists
The initiatives under the “NoW” Fund are part of a long-term strategy of the Northwest Alliance aimed at creating lasting academic networks and increasing the international visibility of the two universities.
About the Northwest Alliance
The Northwest Alliance brings together two reform universities with extensive experience in research, teaching and knowledge transfer. The merger includes around 580 professorships, 6,400 employees, 2,700 doctoral students and a total of 34,000 students. The main goals of the alliance are to combine excellent research with social responsibility and to develop innovative solutions for regional and global challenges.
A central concern of the Alliance is to further develop the region into a coherent research and transfer area. Numerous scientific and non-scientific institutions in the northwest are already closely linked to the universities. In addition, the Hanse-Wissenschaftskolleg has acted as a link between the two institutions for over 25 years.
In addition, the Northwest Alliance sees itself as part of the international scientific community, particularly in its partnership with the Rijksuniversiteit Groningen in the Netherlands. It connects the federal states of Bremen and Lower Saxony and forms an international network in a European border region.
On January 31, 2025, the universities of Bremen and Oldenburg signed a memorandum of understanding at the Bremen state representation in Berlin. This document represents an important step in solidifying their cooperation.

In summary, the “NoW – Northwest Alliance Research Fund” is more than just financial support; it is a strategic step towards stronger and sustainable scientific cooperation between Bremen and Oldenburg. This could have a significant impact not only on research, but also on social development in the region.
