Prof. Michal Kucera new President of Wittheit zu Bremen!

On October 1, 2025, Professor Michal Kucera took over the office of President of Wittheit zu Bremen. He succeeds Professor Gerold Wefer, who is stepping down after 24 years at the head of the scientific society of the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen. Kucera is not only a renowned marine scientist, but also holds the position of Vice Rector for Research and Transfer at the University of Bremen. His nomination marks a significant step in the further development of Wittheit and its tasks.

Kucera emphasizes the importance of science for society and wants to emphasize the value of knowledge and education in everyday life. Under his leadership, Wittheit plans to further expand its activities to support scientific work and organize scientific lectures. The Wittheit zu Bremen, founded on October 29, 1924, is organized as a registered association and has its headquarters in the city's scientific center, the House of Science at Sandstrasse 4/5.

The role of Wittheit in Bremen

The Wittheit acts as a central institution for the promotion of science in Bremen, which also includes supporting numerous scientific associations, institutes and universities. Currently, 95 scientifically active clubs and institutes as well as the University of Bremen are part of this community. The Wittheit also has 67 personally appointed members.

Their traditional tasks include organizing scientific lectures, publishing scientific publications and maintaining relationships with various universities and institutes. A program booklet is published annually that includes around 250 public lectures, without forgetting the valuable award ceremonies such as the Bremen Prize for Local Research, which was introduced in the 1990s.

History and development

Originally founded in 1924 as the Bremen Scientific Society (BWG), it was later renamed Wittheit zu Bremen. Historically, the Wittheit is a successor to the Association for Scientific Lectures, which had been active since 1910. It was founded by the doctor Georg Strube, who is considered one of the initiators.

The Wittheit has gone through many changes over the course of its history, including a renaming in 1941 to the Scientific Office of the Hanseatic City of Bremen during the Second World War. A striking point in its history was in 1945, when it dared to make a new start after the war and was able to revive its traditional values of supporting science.

Michal Kucera's assumption of office is wonderfully in line with Wittheit's roots and traditions. In the next few years, under his leadership, the Wittheit could further consolidate and expand its influence on the scientific landscape in Bremen and beyond.
