Start of the summer semester: language courses for every level in Bremen!
The summer semester, which focuses on language education, begins on April 7, 2025 at the universities in the state of Bremen. The Language Center of the Universities in the State of Bremen (SZHB) offers a diverse selection of semester and intensive courses for a total of 22 different languages. These courses are designed for both beginners and advanced students and offer flexible formats that also include hybrid teaching methods.
A special feature of the offer is the opportunity to acquire university certificates such as UNIcert®. This is seen as a valuable qualification by many students. The KIT Language Center, which received UNIcert® English accreditation in 2008 and extended it for five years in 2022, offers similar opportunities to support the promotion of equivalence in language education.
Course content and additional offers
The course offering at the SZHB includes not only traditional language courses, but also specialized programs to prepare for academic stays, especially in Italy. The languages offered also include heritage languages such as Kurdish, Polish, Russian and Turkish. Those interested in learning English include subject-related courses that focus on natural sciences, engineering and economics.
Participants also have the opportunity to acquire B2 or C1 certificates in English. The support for self-learners is also comprehensive: participants can access various additional offers, including guided self-learning, language cafés and workshops. A Writer’s Help Desk has been set up to provide individual advice on improving English writing skills.
The additional offers also offer opportunities to collect ECTS points as part of the tutor and tandem program. Most of these offers are free of charge for students, which makes participation particularly attractive.
Academic qualifications and recognition
UNIcert® is a recognized certification system for foreign language training at universities, which is supported by the Working Group of Language Centers at Universities (AKS). It enables uniform certification of foreign language skills in higher education and offers students and employees the opportunity to deepen their (technical) language knowledge and, upon successful completion, to acquire the corresponding certificate.
Classification into the different course levels takes place via a mandatory placement test for new participants in English courses. The examination requirements are clearly structured and are based on the levels of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR), starting from basic knowledge up to high communicative competence at C2 level.
